  • Why is Roberto Duran rated so high?

Before you guys jump to conclusions, I'm not saying he shouldn't be. I just want to see peoples reasons for listing him so high in the ATG lists.

Resume more than anything, especially at lightweight.

was 73-1 as a lightweight....beat sugar ray leonard....personally hes top 10-15 putting him top 5 is dumb because he got embarrassed by leonard in the rematch and hearns turned him into mexican sawdust......i rank consistency as the highest factor......

The fact that he stayed so relevant through time and weight classes he wasn't fit for was a great feat. He didn't always win, but he gave and could give anyone a run for their money regardless of weight class. He's beaten some really great fighters and hung in there with the best from 1968-2001.

well for me, he was superbly trained, extremely ferocious, pretty good chin, puncher that could box, great speed and footwork, sideways movement, but he would rather fight a toe-to-toe battle and give u in his prime the world's worst beating, he could give any fighter problems.

Duran had an additude about him. He was not going to lose. Of course his lightweight title run was amazing and arguably put him on top of the all time lists at that weight. But that was not enough, his rise at welterweight was amazing as well. His win over former champ Palomino and even more amazing, his upset of Leonard reflected his winning additude.

Looking back I was not suprised at Duran stopping Cuevas, but back then I thought Davey Moore was too big and figured it was the end for the aging "Hands of Stone". Looking back now also I feel for the late Davey Moore because even though Duran appeared close to his end, he was still as dangerous as a fighter could be. And his win over Barkley was another testiment as Barlkey had just dethroned Hearns. Amazing that Barkley went and in his very next fight gave lb4lb entrant Michael Nunn the fight of his life. Enough so, Nunn's promoter, who thought Nunn had lost and dropped him in disgust. So Duran was always rising for the big fights, always suprising the experts and he did enough to fill four great fighters resumes!

                4 reasons

                Best Lighweight of all time
Best Leonard, Davey Moore, and Iran Barkley at Higher weight class
                He fought for several decades

Last but not least... His style of fighting was brave for a little man (he wasn't an excessive holder like Leonard, could fight from the outside and in, and didn't run).

This is a good reason but the problem is I could name like 20 ATGs that fit the same type of description, yet none are remembered for it like Duran.
