  • David Haye or Tommy Farr?

Was reading a ringtv.com article and came across an ireland based historian called Patrick Myler who claims Farr doesn't hold a candle to Haye. Quote here:

“Lewis and Haye have the essential heavyweight requirement of a pulverising punch, backed by decent skills, movement and supreme confidence. British fans talk nostalgically of Henry Cooper, Tommy Farr and Frank Bruno, but none of these could hold a candle to Lewis and Haye.”

So, let's put this to a vote...my money is with Farr.

Haye would need to beat a Klitschko to even be considered better than Farr as far as I'm concerned, yet his latest comments seem to suggest he wants no part of them.

Has anyone here seen Farr's fight with Louis? Because lasting the distance with a prime Joe was impressive enough, but if some accounts are right and he edged that fight, it eclipses anything Haye has done and likely will ever do.

in Fifteen Fierce Rounds with Louis

            ONLY A FRACTIONAL
            DIFFERENCE

            and Bleeding Eyes

            Farr about to throw punch

            "THE CLEVERER AND MORE
            RESOURCEFUL'- Says Ben Bennison

Joe Louis, the American negro, is still the world heavyweight boxing
champion. He was given the verdict on points over Tommy Farr,
the Welsh champion of Britain, in New York, last night. The fight went the
            "full distance," fifteen rounds.

            AFTER THE FIGHT

            Louis said:
"Tommy Farr fooled me. He is one game, tough fellow, and I doff my
crown to him." (See LOUIS'S OWN STORY)
            Farr said:
"I'm not a squealer. What I want to say most is that Louis is the
best and cleanest fighter I have ever met."
Ben Bennison, the "Evening Standard" boxing correspondent, cables from
            the ringside:
"I do not dispute the correctness of the decision... There was only a
fractional difference in favor of Louis.
"For twelve of the fifteen rounds Farr fought with two cut and bleeding
eyes. But for this, Farr might of won, if only because of his undying courage.
"I say without hesitation that Farr proved himself a better, cleverer and
more resourceful boxer," concludes Ben Bennison.
After the verdict had been given, the ringside crowd showed dissension
by booing, fully 75 per cent of the spectators being of opinion that Farr
had done more than enough to be returned the winner.
After the fight, the doctor examining Farr's hands thought a finger was
            broken.
Broadribb, Farr's manager, said that the decision was "quite fair". I gave
Tommy five or six rounds, and if he hadn't had his eyes bunged up in the
early rounds he would have done much better."

            The "Gate" and
            the Money

The fight crowd was 36,903, the
            official paid attendance being 33,469
            and the receipts approximately
Ł53,150, exclusive of Ł11,000 for film
            and Broadcast rights. The net
receipts were about Ł44,092, of which
            Louis receives Ł22,037 and Farr
            Ł12,000.

            Louise Has Injured
            His Hands

Louis in the fight, bruised a bone
in his right hand. His left hand was
            also swollen. Both hands were
damaged by hitting the top of Farr's
            head.
The right hand may have to be put
into a plaster cast for at least a
            month.
            The proposed fight between Louis
and Max Schmeling on October 12
has been definitely put off until June.
If Louis does any more boxing this
season it will not be until the indoor
season starts late in the year.

sounds like it was more the spectator's hearts telling them farr won, rather than their heads.

I would guess that it had something to do with the fact that Louis had been destroying people since his loss to Schmeling and this fight was much closer and didn't have the crowd pleasing ending fans were becoming accustomed to when Louis fought. More so I would imagine it was the refs outrageous score of 13-1-1 in Louis' favor, while the two judges had scored much closer to what the crowd thought at 8-5-2 and 9-6. That would be my guess, but a guess is all it is.

Tommy Farr by a country mile.. Farr held his own with Louis, Braddock, Nova, Marshall and beat Baer, Burman, Gains, Neusel, Foord, Olin & Loughran..

David Haye beat 38yr old John Ruiz and got the nod over Valuev in the worst fight for the heavyweight title in history
