Can anyone confirm this Story about Dempsey? Not in the same class of heroics of some of the fighters already presented, but there is a touch of heroism about an old man not taking **** and holing on to two muggers till the police can arrive.

Dempsey stayed true to his word as he refused several comeback offers instead remaining content as the successful restauranteur he had become while engagin in several exhibiton bouts for the first few years of his retirement. That isnt to say that Dempsey had become soft. In fact, one of the more colorful legends surrounding Dempsey says that when a pair of teenaged thieves tried to mug an elder Dempsey he proceeded to knock both of the muggers out, holding onto both of them until the police arrived.

Can't think of any other war hero's at the moment, but i'm pretty sure there's some others..

Nigel Benn once overpowered a hanbag thief at one of the airports.. I seem to recall a picture of him sitting on top of the guy until police arrived..

Gary Stretch, former British MW champ, turned actor, once KO'd a mugger who was attacking actress Rachel Welch in a car park.. So the gossip goes, he ended up shagging her for his troubles!... She must've been at least in her 60's lol, and no, I won't be doing a poll on, Would you or wouldn't you?..

Sorry Mickey what part are you putting forward Stretch's heroics on, stopping the mugging or shagging Racquel Welch?

Stretch is filming out here at the moment, and definitely isn't known as the chivalrous type, so I guess he wouldn't have bothered if she wasn't famous..

Not a war hero but I think it would be wrong not to mention him as he recently passed, Arthur Mercante served in the Navy in WW2 and Gene Tunney was his Commanding Officer.
