yes it is true.. i read it in one of the early Tyson books,
i cannot be 100% sure which book as i have lost quite alot of my books due to a flood last November which left my entire town 12ft under water, its in Blood Season, Fire & Fear or For whom the bell tolls..Butch Lewis also tells the story of that incident in a HBO documentary

it was the boxing ability which Spinks showed against Cooney which was impressive, 7 & 8 punch salvo`s with brilliant speed and accuracy.. i have got to disagree with you in that the Klits are bigger than Cooney... Wlad is 6ft 6in & Vitali is 6ft 7in so Cooney matches up to both in size
Wlad has been fighting at over 240lbs for the past 10 years now and i believe he was 245 against Chambers..
Vitali is even heavier at around 250, where as Cooney in his prime was 225.. Against Spinks he was past prime and out of shape, and weighed a career highest of 238lbs..
Prime Klits are bigger than a fat Cooney, and at least 20lbs heavier than a prime Cooney..

I don't know much about roids in boxing apart from those who've been caught.. I reckon if the Klits used them, they'd come out around 20 odd stone lol..

I'd favor Spinks to handle Hopkins in a really ugly fight to watch. I think Hopkins at LHW isn't as big of a threat as a MW Hopkins. Spinks and Hopkins both have great technical skills but at 175 I think Spinks has more speed and power than Hopkins at 175 and would win a close but clear UD.

Although Dawson is a southpaw and could make the fight a bit awkward for Spinks, Dawson would have some severe problems with Spinks. Spinks movement would give Dawson who normally enjoys an advantage of picking when and where the engagements take place in the ring (which is crucial for the southpaw vs. orthodox fight). Spinks wouldn't give him that luxury. I think the real kicker is that Dawson's straight left would have no chance against the Spinks right hand and he would not be able to get in prolonged exchanges. I'd favor Dawson to keep the first few rounds competitive before getting handled for the middle rounds and KO'd.

Spinks vs. the K-Bros is a very hard fight for me to predict what will happen. On one hand I look at the fights he had with Holmes and say that if he could handle Holmes jab from the outside he should be able to handle the Klitschko's jab from the outside. On The flip side I think both Klitschko's have a better straight right hand than Holmes and I'm not sure Spinks would handle both weapons from range as well as he did Holmes. In the end I guess I'll go with a split, I'll take Spinks over the more powerful but sloppier Vitali in a razor thin UD that he will win as Vitali tires and he steals the final rounds. I'll take Wlad over Spinks by simply keeping him at range and forcing Spinks to work to hard to deal with the physical advantages he has.

Great thread, I think Spinks is one of the most underrated fighters of all time due to the Tyson fight.
