Ron Lyle is some what over rated in my opinion. To hear one poster talk you would think Lyle was a one man wrecking crew. Is that really the truth? Lets take a closer look at Lyle's record.
From the start of Lyle's career till his first loss against Jerry Quarry Ron went 19-0(17). That is pretty respectable and even more standard for up and coming fighters who do have power. Of course Ron was fighting the usual journeymen and pretenders on his way up with only Larry Middleton and Buster Mathis (who was in his last fight) as the only decent comp.
After his loss to Quarry Lyle fought 12 more time going 11-0-1(4) till his loss to Jimmy Young. His competition during this time sported a combined record of 440 wins and 147 losses. Not the best, but not the worst either. But if you take Gregorio Peralta's resume out of play (Lyle won a decision and drew with Peralta during this time frame) the wins column drops to 246 wins against 130 losses. Not nearly as impressive and it should be noted Peralta was 38 and at the end of a long career.
After the loss to Young Lyle had 18 more fight going 13-5(8). Unfortunately his opposition in those ko victories was a dismal 58-90.
Now I know Lyle was a strong man and a good puncher, but he is hardly the type of puncher a certain poster has tried to claim in other threads.Comment
