Rocky Marciano G.O.A.T?

I was reading a old Boxing Magazine and a writter said in his opinion that Marciano was the greatest fighter in the history of boxing.

Saying what Rock done was incredible and he beat the best of his era and overcame a reach, height and a late start to become the only ever retitred undefeated HW champion.

I don't agree, do you?

I disagree also, what he did was incredible and I respect the man immensely he is a true inspiration.

But to call him the greatest fighter of all time you need to compare him to Sugar Ray Robinson, Harry Greb, Henry Armstrong etc and he just doesn't come close in my opinion. Great great fighter with the heart and determination to match but nowhere near the Greatest Of All Time.

Rocky is a legend, but he wouldn't scratch my heavyweight top ten.

I'd fear that he would struggle to make it into my top 100 greatest pound for pound also.

Great fighter that at championship level was lucky to catch Louis, Walcott and Charles past prime. If he was born a decade earlier he would have had to contend with prime Louis and Walcott, I wouldn't favour his chances!

If he were born a decade later than he was, he would have had to contend with Liston and Ali, I wouldn't favour his chances there either.

He came at the right time and was the best of his era, its just a shame that his era wasn't that strong.

I disagree, if he was born a decade earlier I think he would've troubled Louis and still maybe would of won, obviously not in the same fashion as he did to the old Louis but still he would of had a chance of winning, Walcott would of been an easier fight the old Walcott was much better then he was when he was younger. Charles was still fighting in LHW a decade before they fought.

Maybe he would be revered as a much better fighter if it was a decade earlier :P it all comes down to whether he could of beat Louis.

I suppose Rocky always had the power to beat Louis. But after watching how old Louis faired against Rocky I'd favour Louis quite heavily a decade earlier, barring a lucky punch from the Rock.......which was possible, Louis was hittable! But Rocky's face would be cannon fodder everytime he closed the distance, if Ezzard Charles could mess up Rocky's face, just imagine the damage peak Louis would do.

As for Jersey Joe, he looked terrific in 1947/48 against Louis, its not quite a decade earlier but I think this version of Walcott would close the show better, but again.....Rocky does always have the punchers chance.

He was Good in his era, but ask your self, what was his era? He got his title from a near 40 yr old man who knocked him down and gave him a lot of trouble. The rest of the men he fought weren't very and good and near bums. Except of course Joe Louis who was in no condition to fight when he fought Marciano.
