Monzon, the king was never beat in his prime and retired champion, even when the king was just past his best he still had a enough in the tank to beat big punching rodrigo valdez. The king went out with out loseing in something like his last 100 fights and with his middleweight title! that is something special that not many greats can even say they did

Ross. His wins over McLarnin and Canzoneri are better than anything on Monzons resume in my opinion.

I would say Ross for the reason Jab outlines, but Monzon had an incredibly dominant reign and his foes were not shabby at all.

Ross, but it's very close IMO.

How come poet? I think Monzon was not very spectacular, but he had incredible toughness and ring smarts. I find those enough...

You could go with either, but based on very different things. I would see this as down to pure personal opinion (obviously everything is based on opinion but some opinions are strongly biased, whereas others are based on fact and reason etc). Monzon has the lesser foes with which to fight and didn't move up to fight some of the big names that were available as did Ross, yet his reign in a single division was much more dominant, arguably the greatest MW reign of all time...Yet Ross' best wins vs Monzon's best wins goes in favour of Ross.

This is one of those comparisons in which it would differ simply on what you take or like to equal the greater fighter. Dominance of one division, longevity and very good opponents or great opponents, more than one weight division along with an excellent reign also.

For me personally, I go with Ross. Only four losses in eighty fights with a couple of draws. Monzon had a similar record. Three losses but had nine draws.

Ross though beats Monzon for me with his wins over divisions from LW to WW. With great wins in each of these divisions, along with excellent reigns in JWW and WW as his LW reign only consisted of two defenses, and these wins coming against some of the greats of each division.

Monzon beat some incredible fighters at MW and while I consider his best wins to be Valdez and Benvenuti, his biggest names were much smaller guys moving up and somewhat past their best. His overall wins though are fantastic and he has some very underrated wins in general. Moyer, Mundine, Briscoe etc etc. Lots of very good fighters. However, they were all at 160.

Ross has the better names IMO and they are across several divisions and he has about the same amount of losses and, for me, that means something when he was fighting the quality that he fought.

Ross beat the lightweight great Canzoneri twice for the JWW and lightweight title. He left the LW title and kept the JWW title defending it about ten times with wins over such fighters as Frankie Klick, Sammy Fuller, Henry Woods, etc. While holding the JWW title he beat the great WW Jimmy McLarnin, lost the rematch and won the rubber match. After this fight he only had one title fight each year following and had given up his JWW title after the third fight with McLarnin (I think that's right anyway). During this down time though he beat the great MW champ Ceferino Garcia two times along with one title defense in his last successful WW defense a couple of years after.

He would then lose his WW title to a rampaging Henry Armstrong and retire for good. Pretty damn great.
