  • Fight of the Year you did not like that much...

All Ring magazine FOTYs are good fights, no doubt about it. Thankfully boxing is an amazing sport, and every year there is always ample choice. However I personally saw a few I was not impressed by, or not impressed by in the right way.

    1953 Marciano - La Starza
I did not think it was a very dramatic fight.

    1983 Chacon - Boza Edwards
Action packed fight, with suspense too. However I found the late rounds almost unwatchable, becaue of how spent both fighters were.

    1987 Hagler - Leonard
I think this one was awarded based on the significance rather than the actual fight itself.

Were you guys disappointed by and FOTY?

        Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward 3

One great fight doesn't make a great trilogy and their third fight sure as hell wasn't great.

James Toney vs Vasily Jirov was a far greater fight that was non-stop action right till the very end.Another very underrated fight from that year was Leonard Dorin against Paul Spadafora.

That's my favorite fight from the entire 80s....

          Anyways...my list:

          1926 -- Gene Tunney W 10 Jack Dempsey I
          1927 -- Gene Tunney W 10 Jack Dempsey II
1951: Jersey Joe Walcott KO7 Ezzard Charles III
          1964: Muhammad Ali KO7 Sonny Liston I
          1978: Leon Spinks W15 Muhammad Ali I
1996: Evander Holyfield KO11 Mike Tyson I (Actually a good fight, but it robbed Gatti - Rodriguez blind)

Love your list. My pick in 1978 would have been Holmes-Norton.
            in 2003, I would have chosen Toney-Jirov over Gatti-Ward.

Did not think Monzon-Benvenuti(1970) and Foreman-Frazier(1973) were FOTY worthy.

I agree on Toney-Jirov and Foreman-Frazier. But I did think Foreman-Frazier and Monzon-Benvenuti were at least good fights. The stuff I listed minus Tyson-Holyfield weren't even good imo.

I thought Liston vs Ali I was a good fight. The third round was very good and the fifth was dramatic with Ali being blinded. I imagine there were better fights that year though.

Tunney vs Dempsey II was a dull fight until the 7th round after which it became a very good fight with Tunney knocked down in the 7th, Dempsey knocked down in the 8th, beaten up in the 10th.

Young vs Foreman was hardly FOTY worthy outside of the 7th and 12th rounds. Saad Muhammad vs Marvin Johnson I was more deserving.

I thought Canzoneri vs Kid Chocolate I was far better than Schmeling-Stribling which was the FOTY in 1931.

Monzon-Benvenuti was a decent fight, competitive with big shots landed by Benvenuti that Carlos absorbed but Mando Ramos-Sugar Ramos was by far the best fight I have seen from that year and I think that it was the most deserving candidate in 1970.

Barrera-McKinney was the best fight in 1996 by far IMO.

Hagler-Leonard, Leonard-Hearns, Ward-Gatti III were fights that I didn't find overly entertaining or deserving of the FOTY monicker. Pryor-Arguello I was basically robbed out of it's rightful place in 1981 (or 1982, I can't remember) but this mistake was rectified with it's placement of fight of the decade. I also thought that Leonard Dorin-Raul Balbi I should of beaten out Ward-Gatti I for FOTY that year, I thought that the action was more fast paced and technical, not to mention matching it for brutalilty and drama, at least IMO.

I also didn't find Corrales-Castillo I all that entertaining, the last round of the fight was great but the rest of it was at least for me hard too watch, they smothered each other too much on the inside for my liking.

Really? I never liked it, because I think it gets "tragicomic" at some point. I don't know how to describe it but it left me a weird feeling the first time I saw it, and everytime i see it it's the same.
