To be fair to Sonny I think he means it pretty much can be said of the majority of fighters atgs or otherwise.
Generally in boxing there is a passing of the torch so to speak, a fighter declines and whilst his skills are still good he is there to be taken by the next great fighter he meets.

Unfortunately it is rare for atg's to meet each other at both their peak and optimum weight. On that subject it might make an interesting thread to name those fights when 2 atg's meet at their peaks and prime weights, probably rarer than you think.

Leonard was the best he fought, and he both won and lost against him.

The Ali one is difficult as there are many you could say are better than the other. Frazier, Holmes. Who is better? I'd go with Holmes being the better of those.

If we just think of Heavy's it is easier to name those who didn't.
        Jeffries to Johnson
        Gap
        Dempsey to Tunney
Gap or Greb if you wish
The whole next batch Sharkey,Carnera, Baer etc to Louis
        Louis to Marciano
        Gap
        Patterson to Liston
        Liston to Ali
        Ali to Holmes
        Holmes to Tyson
        Tyson to Holyfield
        Holyfield to Lewis
        Vitali to Lewis

Are we speaking about the best/greatest fighter period, or best at the time?

Larry Holmes usually ranks higher all-time than Mike Tyson on lists, but the Tyson of 88' is better than the mid 80s Holmes.

          Then Michael Spinks gets mention.

Pretty much just trying to make the point that if you just pick names of a record and ignore the condition of fighters you can make this fit quite a lot.
