What a load of rubbish... i have followed boxing for over 40yrs, i have over 20,000+ fights in my collection, i have more than 12,000+ magazines & books yet up to about 3 months ago i had never ever heard of nor had i ever read of this "Black Murders Row" garbage which is now spewed-out repeatedly on boxing forums... i have all the possible footage there is to have on Burley, Williams, Bivins, Chase, Lytell, Marshall & Booker and as boxing fans we can only go by what we watch on filmComment

Budd Schulberg called them the "Murderer's Row" of middleweights in his book "Sparring with Hemingway: and other legends of the fight game".

The best pound-for-pound fighter?
'I would pick Ray Robinson over Ali and Louis, because he could box as well as Ali - he was so fast - and for his weight could punch like Joe Louis. He was the perfect combined boxer-puncher.'
what happened to his Murderers Row thesis?Comment

its a phrase which has then only been used very recently and taken from that book as i can never recall it being used, i have read several Schulberg books including : Memories of a Hollywood Prince - Muhammad Ali, The Great Benny Leonard & The Harder they Fall, i have also read Hemingway`s 50 Grand as well as hundreds of original books like Gloves glory & God - Henry Armstrong with no mention of that phrase "murders row" which Schulberg coined, yet what is surprising is that when Schulberg was asked who he thought was the greatest pound-for-pound fighter? he said:

It wasn't used in the 40's and 50's but it's a fairly popular term now to describe the avoided middleweight contenders of the 1940's.Comment

Has nothing to do with him being the best.
Plus 'Murderers Row' was the title given to the avoided boxers not the best.Last edited by NChristo; 04-06-2010, 02:30 PM.Comment
