Jack Dempsey tends to get underrated these days as he has magically disappeared from most top 10 lists, despite being #1 60 years ago.

It's all good, I mean I think Holmes is where he should be, usually toward the bottom of a top 5 ATG HW list and Marciano is about where he should be, in the middle or slightly lower of a 6-10 list. I liked your other picks though, especially Liston.

Tommy Burns probably gets overlooked on top 20 lists (I'd probably have him around 19 or 20,) I mean for a guy 5'7", 168 pounds he did have 11 straight title defenses, back when there was only one title. Especially in p4p lists.

I think many of the non-titilist HW guys from the 1970's would have been champion if they didn't come into an era that included guys like Ali, Frazier, Foreman. Jerry Quarry was ducked by Foreman and we will never know if he would have beaten foreman? Quarry and a guy he face Ron Lyle would have been champion in the modern paper belt era. We all know his multiple KD war with Foreman but he also was winning against Ali going into the late rounds. There is debate if Lyle should have been more aggressive instead of trying to outbox the boxer but his ability was further demonstrated in wins against Shavers and a tough argentine figher Bonavena.

Looking at all the paper HW champs its hard to believe that David Tua never picked up a belt. He beat 4 guys who were HW champs on one time or another Ruiz, Rahman, Moorer, and Maskaev. Tua also beat Oquendo who was ROBBED in his fight with Chris Byrd for the IBF title; and that was not a gift decision it was highway ROBBERY. I think that fight was close to the actual date of the 2nd Barrera-Morales fight or maybe it was DLH vs Mosley 2? I had lost respect for the authencity of the sport with such bad decisions.

you must be young, In the late 50's and early 60 everyone thought Liston was to powerful and would destroy Ali inside of 4 rounds. Can a man get some rep power for that. Ask George Foreman he said Liston was the only man that could stand and trade with him.

here a simple list of all 73 Heavyweight champs.

from 1882-1982 there were just 32 HW champions.
in the last not even 30 years we clearly surpassed this number.
just shows being the champ doesnt mean much today, until u beat the lineal champ of course.

I agree that Flynn is hardly underrated but I think Sharkey is the one of the most underestimated heavyweight of all time.

alot of fighters are `Labelled`because of one fight in their career, Michael Spinks & Floyd Patterson spring to mind for losing in the opening round to Tyson & Liston, Jack Sharkey comes to mind for his KO loss to Jack Dempsey... This Topic has Jimmy Young who i feel is vastly overated... Young was very fortunate to get the nod over George Foreman, many claim that Young put Foreman on the canvas (no he never) Young was `gifted` several decisions which greatly enhence his true standing during the 1970s
