They don't actually vote, but they DO influence the voting. Check out who's actually in the hall: There are plenty of non-greats in there.

Quarry is the only man to have fought both Muhammad Ali & Joe Frazier twice each with his 1969 fight with Frazier for the title being Ring Mag FOTY.. Quarry also fought Eddie Machen as a young novice and Ken Norton when way past his best.. He came to London and KOd British, Commonwealth & European Champion Jack Bodell in 60 seconds of the opening round.. Quarry was a great box/puncher who had learned his trade the hard way and knew how to fight... "A Class Act"
As king of the contenders, yeah he should be, but prime for prime, he didn't cut it with the big 2, which unfortunately in his era was Ali and Frazier.. Although he didn' fight him, you can bring Foreman into the equation too, and this kind'a crowds Quarry out of it.. It's just unlucky, because if he'd have come along a bit earlier, I think he'd have dominated Patterson's era and without doubt, been inducted..

Quarry was No1 contender for George Foremans World Title, George wanted nothing to do with Jerry Quarry, the reason being that he knew how dangerous Jerry Quarry was to him, Quarry excelled at fighting Big Powerful punchers like Foreman, Jerry handed Ron Lyle his first pro defeat, he handed 6ft 6ins 24-0(24)KOs Mac Foster his first pro defeat, Jerry destroyed Earnie Shavers in the opening round in a fight billed as "Battle of the Big Punchers"... Jerry went toe-to-toe with a prime Smokin`Joe Frazier for the world title in 69 getting stopped on cuts, the fight was voted Ring Mag Fight of the Year.. and a `forgotten classic`.. so it is doubtful that Foreman would have beaten Quarry with his limited boxing ability and stamina.. also Quarry had a chin made of granite as well as posessing excellent boxing skills which he showed to out-box Floyd Patterson, Thad Spencer & Buster Mathis.

Don't be shocked to see Gatti and Ward get inducted: Neither are great fighters by any stretch of the imagination but both have a rabid group of hardcore fans.

Newsflash: It's not 1967,1968, or 1969. As I said, Quarry's popularity petered out in the late 1970s as his career wound down.

I'm a big fan of Earnie Shavers and dont doubt that there are less deserving candidates already inducted. He may well have done better in another era as Mickey says.

On another note its great to see the guys getting on and discussing boxing.......

Ken Norton is there but if we started inducting Jerry Quarry, Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Jimmy Young because they fought in the Ali era then to be fair we should include the outstanding contenders of all other boxing era's as well. To me the hall of fame should be kept for those who were champions and those who would have been had they been given their chance at the title.

I'm sure Shavers and the rest won't be forgotten even if they aren't in the Hall of Fame.

Probably has to do with him never being a world champion also. If he was my mistake.
