  • is Marciano`s 49-0 record FLAWED!

Is Rocky Marciano`s undefeated record of 49-0 Flawed... i ask this because when Larry Holmes got himself into trouble by claiming Rocky could not carry his jockstrap.. Holmes was refering to Rocky apparently padding his record by fighting his brother `Peter Marciano on at least 4 or 5 occasions so as to boost his record, his brother fought under alias names.. this has also been mentioned in various books.. can any of you anoraks add anything:

I highly doubt that's true. Just a conspiracy theory created by bitterness.

The only questionable thing about the record is that he had his first professional fight under another name while still competing in the amateurs. After winning his debut, he went back in the amateurs to compete in a Golden Gloves tournament, losing to Coley Wallace.

He also won close, controversial decisions over Roland LaStarza in the first fight and Tiger Ted Lowry in the first fight.

I'm not aware of Marciano fighting his own brother to pad up his record though. I've heard it but never seen any proof.

No, he's 49-0. His pro debut is still counted on his record even though he fought under a fake name while he was still an amateur boxer. Much like when Ruslan Chagaev had two professional fights in 1997 and competed as an amateur for 4 more years.

              Gotcha, thanks.

I'm still a little unclear as to why we should care about whatever cans he was fighting early in his career. Seems like another lame attempt to discredit a great fighter.

is his brother peter the fat bald one larry holmes made fun of? if so he was 11 years old when marciano beat walcott and i think rocky was 29....the reason why he defends rocky so much is because that was like his big brother idol....

Many of the detractors of Marciano have trouble accepting that a white guy with little reach and height was able to go 49-0. His wins against guys like Louis and Moore are cheapeaned with comments as he beat guys who were past their prime or whatever. I would agree some of them were past their prime but Rocky is one of the top 5 HW's of all time and i have him top 15 P4P in my ATG list.

What about the stories that he lost a few early club fights. Any truth to that?
