At that time, there is no way I can say anything about a black man not wanting to fight in a war for a country that despised him. It's not like Ali took off to Canada, he refused to fight, got his punishment, and that was that.

It's amazing how many knuckleheads actually believe that the government intended on actually sending him to war. There was no war for Ali to "dodge".

While I do admire him for telling his own corrupt country to go **** themselves,he also commited a very selfish act in giving up him prime years as a professional fighter.

He didn't duck combat as such at most he would have visited the troops and boxed a few exhibitions. More than likely he would have been based in the U.S. carrying out nominal duties and still defending his title. Was he making a stand in his own right or being manipulated by the Nation of Islam is a question worth investigating.
I can see how the families of soldiers who did die might be upset by Ali, including a lot of black soldies who fought bravely for their country and didn't have the luxery of choice that Ali had.
Thought just struck me, how about all the other U.S. fighters of the era especially the champions and contenders?
Were they drafted and what service did they do?
For the U.S. military to zero in and focus on Ali seems a little suspcious given his religeous beliefs and affiliations?

Why should Ali have fought in a war and killed people and stained his soul with the blood of people whom he has no business in fighting. The Vietnam War was a mistake and Ali simply refused to go and fight a baseless war for some politicians benefit. He didn't run, he wasn't afraid of fighting, he did not believe in fighting a war that the USA should have never fought and he took the non-sense punishment that was handed to him.

yes very su****ious.....and you are right, he would've just been used to boost troop moral by boxing in exhibitions, so calling him a coward would be a baseless statement because he wasn't going to fight anyway......nevertheless, it takes a tremendous amount of courage standing up to the US government and sacrificing 4 years of his prime.....

if standing up for his morals and beliefs meant more to Ali than 4 years of his prime, than Ali deserves tremendous respect
