What went wrong with Ouma?

Just saw Ouma fight a spirited fight in losing to Vanes. Ouma took a horrific beating in his loss to Karmazin, and like many fighters who suffered such a beating, has never been the same. Just like you, Ouma was one of my favorite fighters in the early part of the millenium. Unfortunately, like Meldrick and Jermain taylor, Jeff Lacy, Felix Trinidad, and Tyrell Biggs, Ouma was never the same after suffering a one-sided beating. he is now just an opponent.

This makes a lot of sense to me combined with what TheGreatA said earlier. I though he won tonight, but he still didn't seem to have that fire he use to have.

karamzin bombed him to past primeness.....but he was doing ok after that, beat sechew powells and rubios ass.....then taylor bombed him to shotness(it seems to me people dont remember the brutal shots taylor landed before he gassed....he was landing the type of shots that almost KO'ed Pavlik and bruised the **** out of winky even through his guard).......tonight he seemed to be ready to revive his career a bit, then bob arum robbed him.......

He may still have something left, I just saw a bit of tonights fight, he looked alright and it seems he deserved the W, he might still be able to make some noise.

Could be. I really thought this guy was going to make it big 5 or 6 years ago. Im happy his life is so much better than his childhood, but as a fan I feel we missed out.

I was absolutely with you here. I thought Ouma was going to be a somewhat dominant fighter for a long time in and around his weight class pre-Karmazin. The way he dismantled Kofi Jantuah was awesome. I know Jantuah was no world beater, but he was a dangerous puncher with devastating KOs of Santos and Rubio (brutal).

Ouma's work rate and ability to keep his hands moving (effectively) on the inside was the most impressive part of his repertoire. He showed flashes of his old arsenal against Vanes (the right hand leads specifically), but he just doesn't have it all anymore.

I remember talk of Ouma being quite sick going in to the RK fight. I never saw much follow up on it though. Even so, that doesn't explain his lackluster performances after that fight. I thought he looked pretty average against Rubio and Powell. JT fight was a complete mismatch.

i'll never forget seeing him fight taylor, he looked too small but brave. when taylor would land a shot to to the dome it would send the sweat flying off ouma's braids. he had enough to back taylor into the corner's and rough him up a bit. swarmers like ouma usually have short careers though because of all the punishment they take.

I think it's part dedication, part age. I don't think his dedication has been the same since his loss to Taylor, in his losses since that fight he just didn't look like he had the fire and looked downright disinterested at times. The Martirosyan fight was the first time in a while where I saw some of the old flame back in him but that's where the age factor comes in, Ouma a few years ago wouldn't have faded the way he did against Martirosyan.

That is my theory as well. I think Juan Diaz is headed in that direction also if he's not there already.
