are you kidding me,duran lost at least 10 rounds in this fight, duran is an overrated fighter, when he won the lightweight title he gave ken a low blow, then the first leonard fight he just barely squeaked out a decision that should of went leonards way, then he quit in the no mas fiasco, then he lost to benitez, hagler, and when he fought hearns he went down like a tree,he got hit with the right hand and duran hit the canvas jaw first, when he awoke he said he does not remember what happened,no kidding he was sleeping,i do not know how duran is considered a great fight -
Duran seems vastly overated but he did accomplish a lot. He did fight big guys and took loses but he did win titles in weight classes people didnt even imagine and I am not talking about a Catchweight style.
Duran is respected deeply in boxing but I know people who have ranked #1 #2 and #3 on there ATG list, which I think is way overatedComment

1- I don't think Duran is the greatest latin fighter as some do, but people must be on crack if they think he is overrated. Duran was 72-1 as a lightweight which alone merits BHOF contention. The Buchanan fight was a mistake by the ref, he could have given Ken 5 minutes and take a point away. But Duran WAS CLEARLY winning that fight against the bigger man.
2- His fight with Leonard showed his heart. He moved up 2 weight divisions to fight Leonard. SRL thought he didn't have the power in the heavier division to beat him, so SRL brawled instead of boxed him, i had Duran winning by 1 point. Duran remained the only fighter to beat SRL in his prime.
3- Duran cleary outboxed Hagler, and fought with an injured right hand. Hagler did enough to keep his title, i had it a draw. Not bad, for a lightweight to take one of the greatest natural middlweights to the max. BTW, Duran was the ONLY fighter that hagler didn't KO in his 12 defenses of his title. The first Antefuermo fight dosen't count as it was a draw and his disputed lost to SRL leonard. Hearns had an incredible reach advantage over Duran and Duran had just fought a slugfest with Hagler and went down in weight to fight Hearns at Jr Middle. Not taking away from Hearns, but it was fight that Hearns should have won.
4-Duran was champ in 4 weight classes something that was rare at the time. I will say he is not the greatest latin fighter as some think; i believe Monzon, Sanchez, and its close between him and Aguello might be better, but he definitely is one of the best.Last edited by HaglerSteelChin; 11-29-2009, 05:59 PM.Comment

Lets not forget the Davey Moore fight.
Duran was a heavy underdog.
He destroyed Moore in 8 brutal rounds.
Coupled with all his accomplishments and over 100 fights.
He was a great fighter.Comment

That's some weird scoring there. You had the Leonard fight only one point apart but then had the Hagler fight a draw? Duran won the Leonard fight pretty damn convincingly, but lost the Hagler fight also quite convincingly, though he still certainly did very well early on.Comment

Duran proves his critics wrong by winning a gift decision?
Duran thumbed Moore in the first round and it never get's mentioned even though it had a great factor in the fight and Duran's dirty tactics throughout the fight were an absolute disgrace, but the Duran apologists will never mention this as it is a fight of which the Duran apologists look back on fondly, even though I am sure Davey Moore's family do not.Comment

Honestly I did not think Duran deserved the decision in that fight. But sentiment was behind him big time and the KD sealed it. With that said, Duran was amazing and one of the greatest of all time.Comment
