not that his opinion matter but,

ray arcel has been quoted when asked about duran & benny leonard, that benny leonard was the more complete superior fighter.

Take their best traits and compare Willie's defense to Leonards offense, and I think Pep has the stronger trait. Also, Pep had a VERY solid offense to begin with wile Leonard had a shakey chin that got tagged enough to let us know it was shakey to begin with.

If you want to go based on overall career/accomplishments, then you must give the nod to Leonard, in my opinion. He faced the slightly better overall opposition and he did this WITH a shakey chin. Proves the greatness, in many ways with that alone.

Overall, I like Pep better, but the truth is the truth. Both were better in different ways.

Just out of curiosity my friend, what are you basing Leonard having a shaky chin on? By all accounts his chin stood up to some of the best fighters of his era., Im no expert on Leonard and I know he was stopped a few times early in his career, but this is most likely do to a lack of amateur experience. I could be wrong though.

I do agree it is tough to rate them against one another though because both were great in different ways.

I think that opinion carries a lot of weight. Arcel has said that Leonard was the most cerebral fighter he ever saw.

Well, he was 15-16 years old when he suffered his first three stoppage losses and a shot 36 years old when he suffered his last one against ATG puncher Jimmy McLarnin.

Leonard did get knocked down a few times, and Willie wasn't the pillow-puncher he is made out to be, but I'd pretty safely count out the possibility of Pep scoring a knockout in this particular match-up.

Arcel also trained both men so he should know. Leonard during his unsuccessful comeback, Duran almost from the beginning.

I do think his chin has been underrated, to an extent. With that being said, he was hurt/dropped less in his prime for several reasons, in my opinion.

When a great fighter like Leonard is in his prime, he's so good that it's hurt to totally tag him and get him hurt to begin with. He's all over you and you're gonna have a hard time. But a lot of fighters still managed to atleast crack him good enough to hurt him.

By shakey, I don't mean a horrible chin, I mean a chin that could be broken. His was.

It's not meant to be disrespectful, it's simply the term. I'd never say he had a glass chin.

This is what I was getting at when I asked that question.

                Good post as usual.
