  • Punch Stats Of the First Corbett v Jeffries Fight

    My thanks to my old Pal Ghost Of Dempsey for giving me the idea to repost some of my early content this was originally posted in 2017,but another poster has reopened the topic.


    The San Francisco Call published a detailed punch stat of the 1900 Jeffries vCorbett 1st fight.
    Its generally accepted that Corbett was in front at the time of the stoppage and the Call's opinion supports this.
    Rounds 1,2,3,4,5,,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 show Corbett had outlanded Jeffries. Corbett began to noticeably tire after this and Jeffries superior strength ,weight, and youth began to assert themselves. Jeffries out landed Corbett from this point, scoring a KD in the 19th before stopping his challenger in the 23rd rd.
    Corbett landed a total of 404 punches.
    Jeffries landed140 , no doubt there was more oomph in Jeff's blows, and in the rounds after the16th they had a noticeable effect on Corbett.

    "Corbett made a big effort to take Jeffries out in the 9th round, for 2 minutes he landed jab after jab and then followed up with a series of blows on the jaw that had Jeffries hurt and staggering for a short time.It was the only point in the fight that Corbett came near to winning outright.
    Jeffries was bleeding for the nose in the 10th rd, and from the mouth in the 11th.
    Reduced to a walk by the start of the 23rd Corbett was easy prey for the bigger man's punches

    The Call stated the following.

    "The showing made by James J Corbett in his recent battle with Champion Jeffries surprised the sporting fraternity so much that the comment has not subsided.
    That Corbett completely outclassed Jeffries is shown by the accompanying table compiled by the New York Herald by an expert and,according to his count ,Corbett landed 404 punches to Jeffries 140.
    "Had Corbett evaded the knockout blow,referee White could hardly have done otherwise than declared him the victor."

    This is a very good primary source for the fight . You can sort of judge the round by round scorecard, which is even until the KO moment. Some here consider Pollack the expert living Historian of the times, and he writes it was anyone's boxing match.​

      The San Francisco Call is an excellent source.
      Here are others;
      The Journal " up until the 20th round no one in Jeff;s corner thought that eh would win Brady was nearly crazy,they all thought they would go broke losing the bets they had made on Jeff"

      The Police Gazette "Corbett gave the most marvellous exhibition of scientific pugilism ever witnessed in the annals of fistic history." "Up until the time of the knockout,no one would dispute that Corbett had the best of the battle on points."

      The World. Kid McCoy " Jim Corbett lost ,but he made a magnificent struggle,leading all the way until he was suddenly dropped with a left uppercut on the jaw after 2 minutes and 11seconds of the 23rd round.
      The Police Gazette." Jeffries left the ring with his eyes puffed,lips cut and bleeding,nose battered".The only mark on Corbett was a cut on one ear.
      All reporters agreed Corbett could not his hard enough to keep Jeffries off him,that youth and strength eventually won the fight for Jeffries.
      I see you quote Pollack,the man you dismissed as biased when discussing his Johnson books?

        Figure out who I was referring to.

        If you swear by him for the Johnson book, you must accept his statements in his Jeffries book too.

        There is no doubt Corbett in his prime was having a very good performance, but you forgot to tell the full story of the fight. He was down in the 17th and Jeffries won many rounds before that. Read the round by round write up. Brady was Corbett manger before this fight and the too had much in common​.

Tom actually out-matched Jeff from the fourteenth on, 125 to 104 but it was too little, too late." From the "Encyclopaedia of Irish Heavyweight Boxing, Vol 1" regarding the first Jeffries Sharkey fight.

            I posted a round by round from the San Francisco Call,because I thought it might be of interest.

            I'm not interested in your thoughts on James Jackson Jeffries,I know them off by heart,ad nauseum.
