I must read it. I never even knew he wrote one. He lived into the 1980's didn't he?
He must be the most popular of the very first champions as everyone on here loves discussing him.
That film of him sitting in his corner of the ring looking really hungry to fight, people just love it. Iron Mike did the same type of thing didn't he.

        - - Interesting parallels to Mike that Mike quickly picked up on.

Right now I'm getting the background of the cluster**** of promoters for the Willard fight in Toledo for their July 4th fight that included a full pomp of a military band.

Tex may have built his first arena with enough lumber to reach end to end to NYCity. Jack is so super studly that he's over training, running 6-10 miles a day plus sparring. Big Bill Tate his main sparmate and best friend also married to a Senegalese woman who is the very popular camp cook.

Prodigy background-Pop Hyrum something of an alcoholic dreamer is from the notorious Hatfield family in Logan County W ******ia where the McCoy feud broke out. Morman missionaries give a talk such that pop and mom convert and sell everything for a Covered Wagon trip to Utah ca 1890s. Here I discover the Indian blood in him comes from his French Heritage mom who has a Cherokee strain in her ancestry.

Oh, Jess looking at this pipsqueak is very arrogant and so dismissive his training is so lax that at one point he downs a bottle of gin during a meeting.

I thought you said you," already knew too much about Dempsey?"

Yet you are just now, reading his autobiography ,and discovering his heritage and the background to his most famous fight?

            - - I've read over a dozen Dempsey Bios, Ali bios, ect. They all run together. None of them had Dempsey speaking about his heritage.

From what I have gather from independent (disconnected) possible factiod, statements, is that he was . . .

American Indian on his mother's side.
Half ***ish and half Irish on his father's side.

Newspaper reports for the Willard fight noted his brown skin color, but didn't address it racially. He had Indian black hair like mom and fought under the nickname 'Kid Blackie.'

After Willard, he somehow became all Irish and the "Manassa Mauler." I never again found his 'brown' skin referenced after Willard.

When you look at his face you could easily think, 'beat up Irishman' (which he was.) But if you look closer you can see the American Indian. (Especially around the eyes and cheekbones.)

I will graciously stand corrected on any of this, so if you know more or different, please reply.

                  Warning obtuse remark below.

I just realized from my own post above, that "The Manassa Mauler" was a lazy effort for a nickname by the newspaper guys.

The Pottwatomie Giant had just exited, so just they went with Manassa Colorado. Lazy!

I wonder if they (or Dempsey/Kearns) wanted to deliberately bury 'Kid Blackie' as a nickname?
