    Mike Tyson vs George Foreman

Here is a fight that would easily be one of the biggest fights in boxing history had it have happened. Both with great fan friendly styles, aggressive, powerful and always looking for the finish. A shame this fight didn’t happen in the 90’s as Foreman specifically came back to fight Mike but it never came to fruition. We’re here to compare the prime version of George Foreman who dismantled Frazier in 2 and the prime version of Mike who took out Spinks in 90 seconds.

How do both of these warriors stack up against each other, Foreman is the bigger fighter with 6 inches in height and 8 inches in reach both weigh the same given Tysons tank like build. Comparing power you have two of the hardest hitters in history George has brute force and devastating KO power perhaps the hardest hitter in this book. Tyson has great speed, explosiveness and possesses dynamite in both fists however on balance Foreman hits slightly harder and is definitely stronger. George also has the tougher chin where Tyson excels is his superior speed, defensive skills and combination punching. Both fighters are very evenly matched and this literally could go either way.

As the ref gives his instructions neither fighter takes their eyes off the other, both come into the fight supremely confident the build up got heated with both declaring to knock the other out. George stares straight into Mikes soul with those cold dark eyes and constant scowl on his face. Mike’s not giving anything up, staring right back thinking to himself I’m going to knock you the **** out. Two caged animals ready to tear each other apart peace by peace.

The first bell rings and we are off, the commentators are urging people to hold their breath as fireworks are about to go off. Mike comes out of his corner and doesn’t waste any time throwing rights and lefts using his great footwork and speed to bob and weave in and out of position while letting off some great body and head shots. George isn’t too concerned and was expecting a fast start from his foe what he is surprised by is Tyson’s speed and elusiveness also his shots are hurting when they land. Big George weathers the early onslaught and the second half of round one starts to push Tyson back and lands some hard jabs of his own.

Round two begins and both fighters have settled into the fight and know exactly what they are dealing with, things start a little quiet then out of no where Mike lands a perfectly timed body shot then follows it up with a huge left hook to the temple and George is down. The ref jumps in and has to push Mike into the neutral corner. The counts at 5 and Foreman rises, Tyson comes gunning in and throws the kitchen sink at his adversary looking for a quick end to his nights work. Unfortunately George is too experienced and survives a really tough round.

Round three starts the same with Mike looking to take Foreman out, however George has used the minutes rest to clear his head and also to make some adjustments to avoid the combinations of Mike as best he can. With Tyson controlling the pace and landing some nice strikes he walks straight into George’s missile right hand and it sends Tyson to the ropes but he manages to hold on and see out the round.

Round four and Mike is starting to slow, George uses his strength and size to start pushing Tyson back and throw some of his own brutal shots. Mike can take the shots but is struggling to fight going back and hasn’t got anyway to deal with Georges freakish strength, Foreman’s heavy blows are starting to take a toll on the smaller fighter and when up close George ties him up and starts to lean on him sapping Mike of much needed energy.

By round five Mike is starting to feel frustrated and suffers his worse round yet with George coming on strong and really punishing him when he comes in. Foreman has a great ability to make his opponent fight at the range he prefers and is taking full advantage of his tiring foe.

Round six and Tyson is looking pretty dejected but his warrior attitude won’t let him give up he comes out and starts throwing everything at Foreman. With George’s adjustments he is able to parry most of the punches and the ones that land his granite chin absorbs them.

Round seven and Foreman now senses the end is near he comes on strong pushing Tyson back relentlessly, throwing jabs, hooks and overhand rights. Mike’s now hanging on and just doesn’t have enough to turn this around. Big George lands a vicious right on Tyson’s chin and he’s down for the count. Mike bravely gets up but with his eyes glazed over the ref calls it off.

Verdict – TKO win to Foreman round 7

    - - Probably prime George KOs Mike in a stylistic mismatch.

Fact is after Spinks, George and Mike signed for a 20mil Chinese promotion in Beijing that was derailed by the Tienaman Massacre where Buster in Japan was the replacement, and the rest dusty history…

There were discussions but George didn’t want to do business with King so nothing was actually signed…

New York Times June 2nd 1989

The Chinese Government has agreed to pay $25 million to stage a boxing match between the heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson, and the former champion George Foreman, Tyson's manager and the fight's promoter said yesterday.

Among other things, the fight would be contingent on Foreman's remaining undefeated and beating Tyrell Biggs in a bout planned for August. Last night in Phoenix, Foreman kept the deal alive by stopping Bert Cooper in two rounds.

''Foreman is the only opponent the Chinese are interested in,'' said Tyson's manager, Bill Cayton, who has given his approval for the bout.

If I remember correctly, Arum used to claim Tyson was terrified of Foreman and he didnt know why

Both were revenue generators on their own, so it was profitable for both to bypass each other and keep their controllers/investors flush. Remember Sanchez not fighting Pedroza, Trinidad not fighting Quartey, Byrd not fighting Ruiz, same deal.

As much as I love mike he's definitely losing this one, matter fact he might even get knocked out a prime foreman would be a living hell nightmare for Tyson. Not only is foreman bigger he hits way harder and he knows how and when to cut off the ring. The only way I see Tyson winning is keep moving around foreman and keep looking out for foreman's punches and know when to he's coming to the body and keep jabbing and hooks to foreman's body, if mike can do that the whole fight for 12 round then he wins beats foreman on points. If its a 15 round fight Mike has little to no chance of winning.

If this fight takes place in the 90s then I have mike winning He would have to watch out for foreman's old man strength and keep his feet moving and jabbing and throwing counters. Foreman's only chance of winning is he'll have to catch mike with a crazy hard punch that'll be enough to hurt Tyson badly and send him to the ground, but that'll be if he can catch mike lacking or faking him to get him off guard to the point where Tyson is too tired.

Either way it'll be a all time classic and a fight to remember for decades.

Foreman didn't do a bunch of dream fights. But he was older so it makes sense he didn't want to risk against guys like Bowe and Lewis.....but the Holmes fight should have happened. That's the biggest what if in boxing. Foreman might of ate a few from Tyson especially at that stage Foreman was real slow, but he'd get to him eventually and KO him. If Foreman could hit a prime Holyfield he'd hit Tyson.

                    - - Keep in mind that after the first Chinese fight expired, Buster knocked out a sedated Tyson. Post prison Mike quite graphically turned down a lucrative Foreman fight knowing that Foreman was gonna KO this decrepit 4 round version of Tyson.

The fight results were never etched in stone as you might have them be.
