  • Billy Papke - George Bernard 1912 France

Papke stopped Bernard in six rounds (RTD).

The New York Times (NYT December 5th -1912) states that Bernard forced the fight for the first five rounds (or that Papke let him.)

Papke opened up in the sixth round and Bernard went down twice. Wobbled back to his corner.

Official result: Bernard failed to answer the bell for the seventh round.

So says The New York Times.

Another report claims Bernard fell asleep on his stool at the end of the sixth round, and his seconds were unable to shake him awake enough to please the refree.

The suggestion is not that he was groggy, but instead, that he was actually sleeping.

    Bernard claimed he was drugged.

Anyone else ever hear of this fight?

Nothing of any use. Billy Papke beat Georges Bernard by RTD in round 6 of 20

Papke defends his claim as World Middleweight champion. Bernard did not answer the bell for round seven.

The Tacoma Times reported that Papke was also awarded the middleweight championship of France.
