Instances Someone Fought a Sparring Partner

Are there instances where someone fought a sparring partner of their current camp due to the original opponent pulling out? Note, I'm not referring to situations like Wilder vs. Helenius where Helenius was a past sparring partner. Thanks.

If they did, and I bought a ticket, I'd be pretty pissed off.

I'm sure in the early barn storming days (early 20th century) that was the show. Traveling 'camps' that fought one another at whistle stops.(Like roller derby did for the latter half of the past century.)

Fitzsimmons and Jeffries did quite a bit of barnstorming and eventually set of a semi permanent circus tent in California and the crowds came to them. Fought the same guys multiple times.

I realize those are not the fights you are thinking of, but you can find them listed on the Cyberboxing webpage but not Boxrec.

From the title, I first thought you meant in general, and knew there must be a hundred instances of that. Your question is harder, but my bet is there are folks on here who already know. The collective knowledge and information on the forum is very impressive.

I don't know of any such fighters.

I am ready to say I doubt it has ever happened in a main event. On undercards there are probably many examples of last minute switches and even planned fights, that are half fight and half sparing, from guys from the same gym.

But a main event? I don't think so.

I'll keep the bar low, I am not saying it has to be a title fight, I doubt any main event (a ten rounder in a club fight scenario) still wouldn't get away with a bogus act like that. Where's the commission?

IMO One needs to go pre-War, at the very least to find that kind of move.

The 1920s were full of charlatans.

Povetkin and Duhaupas. Duhaupas came in at last minute when Stiverne pulled out I think

Yes, I remember that. He came in after Stiverne withdrew on the morning of the fight, I think.

              - - How many sparmates did Ali fight…Or alternately how many dozens did he fight?

Ellis to start with and then I guess Holmes. Are there more?

The OP didn't want the kind where you say: "He was once Ali's sparing partner."

He was searching for match-ups where the the sparing partner had been in the fighter's camp leading up to the fight.

Which I see as fraud and believe wouldn't be allowed by a commission. But then again this is boxing we're tslking about.

Don't know how many but I am certain the only one who could take Ali in the dozens was Bundini Brown.

Not sure there were many who were in camp with him leading up to their fight.
