Bones do not thicken by size. That is why there is a max mass of species. This is easily looked up. Things might evolve to be a larger species but every species has a max size their genes for bone production can handle.

Trauma does thicken bones. We have reports that claim the Spartans thicken their skulls by punching one another in the head as "training" but outside of that all I can think of is regular bone based medicine. Traumatize a bone and it thickens, simple, gives some believability to the Spartan accounts.

Lyle must have had a thicker skull than Shavers. There were once reports that JCC had an abnormally thick skull. But hell, there were once reports of Ricky Hatton's punch being strong enough to fell a bull. 1400 pounds of force--something like that.

Neither Lye or Shavers had a big head or good boxing chin.

JCC did. As did Vitali Klitschko with his big strong neck and head. He was one of two heavyweight champions never to be knocked down.

If your looking for an old timer Jim Jeffries all has a strong neck and huge head. Here is a good side profile of him.

Vitali's head is no bigger than his china- chinned brothers.Lyle's head looked similar to Ali's in size.McCall's head isn't really bigger than that of loads of other heavies.Just because a few examples of fighters with big heads have been given,it doesn't mean that that's a definitive test of chin durability.
Jack Johnson had a big head,[in more ways than one,]yet you say he was weak chinned?
Wayne McCollough has an ATG chin and his head is small.

His head and neck were dwarfed by Jeffries, a real heavyweight. Here is a side by side photo of the difference in had and neck size.

Now don't ruin this excellent thread. Johnson in my opinion when hit flush on the head or chin went down or out early. Good thing for him that did not happen often. Three men under 180 pounds out him down. Let me know if you need the examples.

Nobody's ruining anything I am making a salient point.
This may have escaped you ,but Vitali is notably bigger than average.therefore so is his head and neck!

Side by side is his head and neck bigger than his brothers or Lennox Lewis'? Clue. The answer is no.
Carnera had a huge head and neck but was chinny. Abe Simon was not.
My point being skull and neck dimensions are not a reliable way to assess chin durability.

It's that simple.
