JOHN L. SULLIVAN in BLACK & WHITE - YouTube
The footage of Sullivan hitting bag is uncommon. The doc listed several newspaper offers for with Frank Slavin and Peter Jackson pre 1892. It also references a potential match up with Charles C Smith ( 1st colored champion ) and mentions Irish Peter Maher. Sullivan of course fought non of them. Nor did he meet Goddard. Nor did he meet fellow puncher Pat Killen.

Just he fought just one of these names, his legacy would have been even greater. Two of them?! Well, he was 31 years or younger when the matches were talked about and offer to him. As history shown he avoided all them.

The best name on his resumes from 1884-1892 of gloved fighter is Cardiff. He should have lost that won, but recived a draw.

    Gate: $8, 000
Attendance: 10, 000 (Minneapolis Journal 1-19-1887) According to the St Paul Daily Globe, Cardiff did most of the fighting and should have received the decision.
I find his resumes of wins of gloved fighters to be very thin. While at the same time the listed of fighters he did not fight to be better and very long.

But an interesting historical recap of an era I knew nothing about.
Recommend and easily obtained reading, Klein, Pollock and Isenberg have each done the man, "Himself"; justice. Sullivan's autobiography is also a must read.

Who did Sullivan beat that was really good? Names please. List them. He did not fight Jackson, Slavin or Goddard. Each man would rate as his 2nd or 1st best opponent he fought He had a chance to but passed.

He did not fight Godrey, Maher, CC Smith ( 1st colored champion ) either and got a gift draw with Cardiff who was decent but not in the class of the listed men I mentioned. And was floored by a middle without who could not punch. In fact he did not fight any man in my 1890-1902 contenders tournament running here.

Convince me otherwise. " school me "" Calling all John L. Sullivan fans who are fans and knowledge of him. Calling and book authors of him. Educate me if you can. Otherwise I am likely right.
