    Boxing's current legend: Manny Pacquiao?

    Who is boxing's current icon?

Watched the Chris Rock special. In referencing the Will Smith slap he stated "[I] took it like Pacquiao."

Why didn't he say (undefeated) Mayweather? Is Money not perceived as 'tough enough' to be this generation's boxing icon?

(Certainly not any of current or even recent HWs fits the role.)

Twenty years ago, who would Rock have referenced, Duran maybe?

But it is these types of popular references that creates a legend, a great boxing record alone won't get you there.

There is something intangible about being a star and not just merely 'great.'

    - - Manny entered the American pantheon as a forever hero a long time ago.

He's happy go lucky as opposed to the intimidating Ks who remind American men they ain't what they used to be in the days of Joe Louis...

Yea but you do agree it takes more than just being 'happy go lucky.' If that's all it took Fury would be everyone's hero and the icon of the game. But he doesn't even come close.

Does any 12 year old American boy have a picture of Fury or the Ks on his bedroom wall? I think not.

These days I hear more people mention Tank and Garcia when talking with them about boxing.
