    If Nunn had beaten Toney...

...would he be seen as an ATG today? Before that he beat names like Donald Curry, Sumbu Kalambay, Iran Barkley, Marlon Starling, Juan Domingo Roldan and Frank Tate. Most of them are HOFs or HOF worthy fighters. So had things gone his way against Toney, would he be considered an ATG if he had added another great name to his conquests?

Who else did he had to beat in your mind before he could be considered ATG?

Possibly. Especially if Toney had gone on to achieve the other things he did like titles at 168 and 200.

I dont know, but he seemed destined to go off the rails imo. That Toney defeat was a culmination of some poor/average performances before that fight.

He looked sensational against Tate, he looked good against Roldan to but after dropping Roldan he started taking his eye off the ball and he was starting to let Roldan back into the fight, that was Nunn's biggest problem imo, he did not have it upstairs, he clowned too much when he should of been concentrating on the job at hand.

His KO of Kalambay is self explanatory, however its sufficient to say that Kalambay was a great fighter who had wins over some great fighters, most notably Mike McCallum. Great win.

He looked terrible against Iran Barkley, he obviously underestimated Barkley.

Marlon Starling was a great fighter but! Marlon Starling was a WW and he gave Nunn a very difficult night, infact you could make a case that he won the fight.

He had a good performance against Curry that sort of made you think he was back on track and then came the Toney fight where he got nailed.

Something like that was bound to happen sooner or later imo.

Doesn't Nunn also have a win over the ATG John Scully?

Nunn always seemed a bit too fruity to be ATG. He had those physical attributes which ended up taking him a long way but he was mentally a little slow I think.

As Dynamite Kid pointed out he had a lot of fights leading up to the Toney one which were very close. The Barkley fight had a lot of spots in it that if it had been a prime Barkley it could have been very different, even then Nunn got hit a lot by a much slower, older version of Barkley.

The Curry fight was ok, but Curry wasn't exactly good by then. Starling fight was terrible too.

His only really great fight was the Kalambay one, who is an amazingly underrated fighter. He was a boxing purists dream and damn he was good when he was on.

Did anyone else always want someone to wipe that idiotic expression he always had when he came into the ring right off his face?

I have always wondered this because the fight as pretty even until the ko....what if Nunn had survived and won a close decision or lost it even. Would he have achieved greater things?
