    Fantasy Fight

Here's a fantasy fight I don't believe anyone has adressed (at least recently anyway)

Jack Johnson vs. James J. Corbett.

What I like about this match up . . .

Boxing eras are identical, we don't have to make adjustments in equipment, nutrition, styles, growth of the game itself. We can call them (almost) contemporaries.

Also I like Corbett's size. Looking eye to eye with JJ, Gentlemen Jim wasn't a small HW. It is unlikely Johnson could make his favorite tactic, of holding his opponent in place while he waits for opportunities to let loose, work.

Corbett would be very difficult to catch, and would likely force the action from the outside. When held, I believe he would have been strong enough to force himself free.

I think it would be a great fight. Two boxers who had mastered the techniques as they were then.

I can see Corbett winning a limited round decision. I can see Johnson winning if the matter is extended.

Johnson from 1909; Corbett from 1892.

    Any other opinions?

    - - Corbett a proto young Ali moves too much and pecks too hard for a tepid styles clash decision.

Corbett has 3/4" in height Johnson 1 " in reach. .

in1892 Corbett weighed 178lbs. Johnson around 208lbs 30lbs advantage to Johnson.
Apart from foot speed I don't see where Corbett has any advantages here. Fitz didn't have fast feet but he stopped Corbett with one left to the body.
Johnson didn't dance around the ring,he didn't have to.

      Johnson would manhandle Corbett inside.
Whoever beat a prime Johnson at long range?
I see Johnson winning handily, over 10rds and over

Over 6 rds Corbett might keep away and snatch a dec.but he couldnt keep away from crude Sharkey in 2 fights.
What is Corbett's best win? John L Sullivan, alcoholic ,34 years old ,, retired for nearly 5 years? It took Corbett 21 rds to wear a fat dissipated Sullivan down to a state of exhaustion.

Charlie Mitchell 165lbs? Who did Mitchell beat?

      Jim Corbett's record is 11- 4-3
      Sorry I'm not impressed.

        Terrible mismatch!

Johnson much too good and strong. He would toy with Corbett in the clinches - until he decides, it's time to finish it!
