  • eubank vs hopkins - prime for prime

    who ya got and why/how?

i think the fighters are very similar, both dont have a great punchoutput but pick their shots very well, are big MW's, both have good right hands and solid jabs, both have really good chins and even outide the ring both are entertaining and hype themselves and their fights really well.

in terms of combinations and power punches i think hopkins is the better fighter, he throws good combos sometimes but admittedly they only look good against fighters like tito and pavlik, against quicker fighters like joe and JT he sometimes looks sloppy and amateurish when asked to come forward (maybe because hes afraid of being countered). however eubank can be hurt to the body and hopkins imo has the better stamina as well i see him taking control of the fight late on.

euank maybe vulnerable to the body but that was against big punchers like benn and hopkins is no big puncher, eubank is imo the quicker fighter and has good right uppercut. i think hed more aggressive as well and that could lead to him winning a few rounds.

i have eubank by SD, although i wouldn't be surprised if it was a draw

** Must not have ever seen Poppy in his prime. He was so good at promoting himself that for a decade his main claim to fame remained the answer to the trivia question of who Roy outclassed using one arm tied behind his back to win his first title.

Eubank has the worst possible style and personality for Poppy who had quite an active punch output and offensive aggression in his prime. Chrissy would bait this overaggressive version of Poppy without mercy, and catch him coming in all night just like Roy did.

Eubank was talented enough with enough popularity that he could float around for the bulk of his career with minimal training against mostly inferior opponents for big money compared to the peanuts and chicken bones Poppy was scrapping over. Eubank never realized his full potential of talent because he was always going to be more than mere fighter.

Alas, by the time Poppy becomes brave enough to man up against Tito, Eubank had well outgrown the division and boxing in general.

sorry mate i guess i should have mae it clearer that this is prime for prime

hopkins prime imo was probably the tito fight he still had the body of a man who was in his late twenties and still had alot of his phsyical attributes, he was still able to fight 12 rounds at a strong pace and had decent handspeed and output. i think from here onwards we strated to see him use his boxing nous to outfox his opponents.

bernard was very aggressive in his earlier days but as he developed he shunned the wrecking ball approach and became a counter punching boxer/puncher. thats the sort of fighter he was when he hit his prime,in fact these days when bernard is asked to come forwad against who he knows can counter him he looks sloppy and amateurish (see the taylor fights).

p.s. who voted eubank by KO??

** Sorry mate, you must be thinking about an arguable PEAK since Poppy fought nobody remotely resembling a threat for years before or after this fight.

Well, the good news is that you finally got the email several years after Poppy's prime that yes, indeedy, at one point Poppy had a notable offensive threat. Thing is, would Eubank even bother to train to dispose of a Tito?

Don't think Chrissy would be much challenged by a little fighter who hit the canvas like clockwork and could be outboxed, outfoxed, and outworked.

Poppy is an unusual fighter that seems not to have had a prime that can be pinned down because of the limited nature of his career opposition mixed in with his few notable losses and wins.

Hopkins career opposition/title defenses are pretty good fighters. Not elite level fighters, but they were good quality contenders. Hopkins prime was 97-03 by the way.

Roy Jones used his right hand a lot in their first fight. That was the least "beat em with the left" fight I've ever seen....

Hopkins definently had a prime, he's just never looked bad so it's hard to tell if he's past it or not.

It pretty easy to see that the Hopkins that beat Trinidad surpasses the B-Hop that beat Pavlik even though.

I like Hopkins by late KO. Eubanks is no pushover though and could make things interesting.

Eubank was special. I've never thought Hopkins was special. Masterful, but not special.

                    Eubank points.
