      The important question is when?

I have a hell of a lot of respect for Marciano, but if he were fighting today he'd probably have eight DQs against his record. The refs back then let him get away with murder - figuratively and literally.

I can't imagine what Toney would do if he found himself on the end of Rocky's roughouse tactics. Maybe shoot him.

Yeah I know. Thats why he's so highly thought of in comparison to Marciano, right? Please.

I'm going with the Rock. He's just too much of a force and his boxing mechanics are underrated

Marciano did beat down Archie Moore who fought in a similar style as James Toney does. Toney has a better chin than Moore but certainly not more punching power.

It's a good style match-up for Toney but his punches would have very little effect on Marciano. He might get completely outworked as he was at times against Jirov (although he still controlled the fight).

Toney won't have to hurt him to beat him. Just outbox him and show-off his handspeed like he did Barkley. Rocco would come right forward trying to knock Toney's head off, but Toney's shoulder-roll defense, iron chin and speed would neutralize anything Rocky throws at him. Rocco would get swelled up bad and probably get stopped on cuts. Of course, this is an in-shape and 100% focused James Toney.

so it's toney at CW (say the one that fought jirov) vs marciano?
toney would absolutely embarass him! excellent style matchup for toney, toney loves come forward fighters who constantly try to bully him, he would roll, slip and counter all day long
Seems to me that Jersey Joe Walcott tried that too.

and he has the chin to survive marcianos attacks if he landed any

The Toney that Jirov fought would be a tough fight for Marciano. Not only was Jirov a southpaw, but he was one of the better body punchers in recent memory too. He wasn't a stiff.

Rock was very strong, had great punching power and had a lot of stamina. It would definitely be a war of attrition. I'd take Marciano to outwork James down the stretch of the fight. Jirov was about as tough as they come, but he couldn't handle the 350+ punches that Toney landed. I think Marciano could handle it...he'd take home the victory.
