The account basically only says that they fought hard. Normally I would have responded to it, but I didn't see a reason to. It's actually in tune with the Jack Johnson statement that I posted in my thread about it. Ketchel wasn't a part of any agreement. Johnson himself chose to go down.

Apparently my thread made you want to chime in (maybe because YOUR feelings were hurt? lol). Too bad you failed to read the information and wasted your time posting a long story that doesn't contradict what I posted


But since I'm sure you're alluding to me, I'll post his statement about the fight here too.

Knockdown looks suspect. Slow mo or pause at around 9:37. Johnson headed down before punch lands.

Right on all counts. While Johnson clearly ducked the idea of facing Jeannette and Langford in France, he did fight a mediocre white hope in Frank Moran in France, with the angle of the fight being he was French.

The fight itself lasted 20 rounds. Johnson was slightly the better ( mostly on the inside ) while Moran landed more on the outside. They fought at a slow pace.

At one point on the film Johnson clearly fouls bbq hitting on the break, and Moran who was not paid a dime thought about quitting.

Johnson remarked he wasn't sure he could last the distance.


The Johnson Fight

"Thus Moran was considered a meaningless pushover when Jack Johnson announced him to be the next man to get a shot at the title. Johnson, convicted of a federal morals crime, had fled the U.S. and was now living a glutton's life in Paris, France, where Moran traveled to meet him for the contest. Most regarded Johnson's lack of enthusiasm for training and fighting as being the real reason for his selection of the challenger, and not any accomplishments on the part of Frank. On June 27, 1914, at the Velodrome d'Hiver in Paris, Moran gave it his best effort. The overweight and unprepared champion was sluggish, which allowed openings for "Mary Ann" on several occasions. It was a shoving, punching, wrestling, and fouling match fought at close quarters in the center of the ring. The challenger surprised many by winning several rounds. Meanwhile, the champion retaliated with fouls Frank by repeatedly punching on the breaks. As the fight drew into the closing rounds, rumors circulated through the arena that the title was about to change hands. When the fight ended, however, referee Georges Carpentier, himself a "White Hope" contender, awarded his decision to Johnson, who could consider himself lucky to have stayed on his feet for the full twenty rounds."

- -Saw what remains of the Moran fight on the tube back in the day, but what I saw was fast paced with little holding by JJ, one of his few viewing friendly fights.

Never heard the fight promotion was the supposed Moran French angle, so that's interesting. Moran in the mix with top heavies of his era a bit forgotten today.
