Totally unrelated and I know amateur boxing and the pro's are 2 different beasts plus level of opposition etc etc but I'm always amazed by Hearns amateur record.
11 KO's in 150 odd amateur fights then he KO's in 3 rounds the 1st dozen guys he fights in the pros and becomes knowns as one of the best KO artists of all time.
Kept that hidden a bit didn't he

I remember him outpointing Ray Gilbody as an amateur, and yes you're quite right, he wasn't by any means a puncher back then.. I think that was at 135!

I thought he would be a great fighter and a great champion.

Wasn't he voted the best fighter at the Olympics(sp) ?

Ernie Bennett was a middleweight, super middle as a pro. Used to train at southside gym in Boston. I believe rollie or PaPa Ray trained him.
