On one hand, Louis has the record number of title defenses and he beat more hall of famers and world champions than Ali did. On the other, you could say that Ali's competition was better and that winning the title three times was more impressive.

    Hard to choose.
I favor Louis, but you can't go wrong with either one. They are far and away the two greatest heavyweights ever.

    • Nice thread i agree that the bomber and ali were the best. There is an article on the top ten heavyweights at this site that also puts them as the two best but with ali ranked above Luis.

Not to be persistent, but there were many fighter's in the 70's that would get very tired in the ring.

George Foreman, Ron Lyle, Ernie shavers, and even Ali during his later career.

However, while today sucks, during the 80's I haven't seen any footage of the top fighters ever tiring to the point of collapse.
How can you overlook that since Foreman, noone has hit that hard? Even Sam Peter and David Tua had nowhere near that kind of bone crushing power...Foreman was a power puncher by trade, whenever a problem arises with his fighting style, what is his answer? More power...Stamina is bad, don't do more roadwork...add more power...

Same with Earnie Shavers, who is reputed to hit even harder than Max Baer, placing him as the hardest hitter in history...His punch made Tyson's and Tua's look like middleweight shots...Bad chin? Piss poor stamina? What was his solution? Not to improve his defense, or work harder...But to add even more power and just crunch his way through the problems O.o Ludicrous as that is, it works fairly well for a true heavyweight puncher.

I would even Argue that Ron Lyle, from fighters accounts, hit harder than any of the recent big hitters like Tyson, Lewis, Ruddock, Tua etc...One cannot overlook a big man that does 1000 pushups and 1000 situps a day in preparation for a fight. Albeit I do believe that most top fighters could handle Lyle, I think Tyson would massacre him for staying so open and hittable.
