      1. Muhammad Ali
      2. Joe Louis
      3. Jack Johnson
      4. Lennox Lewis.....YUP! Never thought I'd place him this high myself; but he did beat some top quality fighters and avenged his defeats....the quality of his competion being the deciding factor for me at the time being.

      .

I personally think you should put Rocky Marciano over Lennox Lewis based on your own argument. Marciano beat some decent opponents, and retired unbeaten. That is as good as Lennox Lewis, no doubt.

Lewis beat more quality opponents IMO and reigned longer. Not taking anything away from the ROCK though, who is much greater than many give him credit for.

            • Marciano should be on no top ten list

              • I agree that Rocky would struggle to make top 10.

I think what matters here is if we are looking at achievements or more a who'd beat who (p4p type) HW rating.

In my opinion Rocky is around 8 or 9 all time. When you go undefeated and beat everybody worth fighting during your era, you're great. Period.

All we can go on when rating a fighter all time is acheivments. There is no way to accurately guage who would beat who from different era's, UNLESS the era's are close and there are common opponents. But most of the time, acheivments are all you got./ Based on that.....Rocky is without a doubt an all time great.

                  • On achievements, yes. I agree.

As for knowing who'd beat whom, we cant KNOW, but studying fighters styles, expert opinion, results against like minded and stylistically similar fighters allows us to make informed opinions.

True enough. But opinions aren't facts and shouldn't be treated as such.
