Who could have been great (or greater) if they hadn't got glass jaws?

Odd thing with Hearns is at 147 he didn't even have a bad jaw, it's more so his agressive style and disregard for defense wasn't exposed until he moved up where fighters were taller and took a better shot, were willing to rush in. Hearns didn't really defend himself well because his guns were so powerful at 147.
If we are gonna talk about weak chins though we are living in the era of weak chins.
Amir Khan, Anthony Joshua, wladmir....all the weak chin guys seem like skinnier dudes who put on tons of muscle that actually slowed them down and allowed them to be ****** out.
But Wlad, no. He was actually hurt for being aggressive.
Most fighters would have shared his fate that night against Sanders.
When men weigh well over 200 pounds, they have the force to end fights suddenly.
I watch my cats fight and their like most pit bulls. Lots of action, but no ones going to die instantly. When Wolves fight the conflict is mortal, and almost instantaneous.
If you were a Wrestler you'd know this, too. The little guys are like gymnasts. The big dudes are huffing and puffing within a minute. But in a real fight, the big guys end things fast. No one is built to get slammed on cement.
Wlad's chin wasn't as bad as people insist it was. They say condescending things because they don't know Boxing.Comment

Julian Jackson didn't had a bad chin, by the time he faced Graham his eyes were almost gone, it's hard to defend if you can barely see the punches coming. During his prime he was only stopped by McClellan at 160 and McCallum at 154, each fight was stopped while he was on his feet and both of them could stop almost anyone in their respective weightclass.Comment

Wlad went down in sections in laughable fashion vs Purrity (53-20 pro record losing 3 of 4 bouts leading into the fight), Sanders (only three bouts in the three years prior to the fight) and Brewster (no notable wins prior to the bout). These losses are why he reverted to a safety first style. Keep away and hold tight in close. Do everything possible not to engage/take risks as his chin could not take an errant blow.Comment

you're right about Hearns. Cutting weight, actually had a lot to do with it.

Ali was knocked down vs Cooper but came on in the very next round to overwhelm Henry. In the rematch Ali won every round to again win via stoppage.Comment

When guys like Zarate and Olivares get sparked, then I question the fighter's chin. But Wlad fought amongst titans who are often there ONLY because they hhave soul-stealing power.
Foster got KO'd by Frazier in one round, did he have a glass jaw? When fighting fighters his own size, or where he could impose his size advantage he looked real study, but when he moved up in weight he became fragile. Same can be said of **** Tiger whom he bombed out to win the Light Heavyweight strap.
The bigger the fighters get the more the fight becomes like walking a tight-rope.
I'll say this: I can't imagine Wlad needing smelling salts to survive Henry Cooper, or getting bullied into a corner by Joe Frazier. I definitely don't see him getting stopped by Jimmy Young or Buster Douglas. The point is, a lot of how sturdy a fighter's chin is evaluated to be comes down to how people WANT to remember it.Comment

Who did Jimmy Young stop?
Frazier koed Foster in round 2.
Foster as a light hwt was rarely hit solidly.
Size does not make a fighter a puncher. Carnera was huge but had little power. Dempsey was 190 pounds and hit like a hammer. “His blows sounded like a wooden hammer hitting an anvil”. Punching very hard is a skill. Add more weight without losing speed to this skill you punch harder. Add speed harder yet.
You know nothing. Wlad was knocked silly in laughable fashion three times. Watch these bouts, watch how Wlad collapses in sections. Laugh riot. Chin of glass.Comment
