The in-ring action that I'd like to see from Ali doesn't come from an actual fight, but from a couple of sparring sessions in July of 1971 as he prepared for the Jimmy Ellis bout...
Muhammad Ali vs. Sgt. Eddie Brooks
That's the sessions where the lightish punching Brooks reportedly had Ali in really bad shape, and proceeded to drop him on three seperate occasions over a two-round session with his short right hands, as well as coming back again the very next day to follow up those three knockdowns with yet another one.

I've read about this before but I thought it was just an exaggerated tale. I'd like to see it, but obviously if we were to see it we would have to watch it with the view that Ali wasn't top shape really and so the knock downs don't mean much.
But is it possible to view the sessions? Were they recorded on video?

Nah, they might have been recorded at the time for the camp's own purposes, but I will not retain any semblance of hope in ever seeing those sessions for myself...
And apparently there was also another knock down scored by Brooks over Ali in sparring six days before, according to the July 13th edition of the NY Times, which states that Ali was "knocked flat on his back" via a "short right to the chin".
Couple that one with the three he suffered on July 18th, which was reported in the Washington Post ("Ali was knocked down three times in two rounds today"), as well as the one he suffered the following day ("Brooks knocked him(Ali) to his knees near the end of the first round of their sparring match with another short right hand" - Sheboygan Press), and that brings the grand total to five knockdowns suffered in only a week's span by Ali against the ever immortal, Sgt. Eddie Brooks.
By the way, the Ali/Ellis fight was on the 26th of that month, I believe, which was only a week after four of those knockdowns took place.

Bloody hell. I thought that it would of been much farther away from the fight than that! SO it seems Ali was in top shape when he fought the legend that is Sgt. Brooks
It seems almost impossible to comprehend a little known fighter flooring Ali five times when he fought great hitters like Foreman and Liston and withstood whatever was thrown at him!
