On paper, Floyd Schofield Jr. is precisely where he should be as a 20-year-old entering just his twelfth pro fight.
Just don’t expect him to dig in at this level.
The prodigious lightweight prospect is set for his first televised headliner, as he faces Mexico City’s Daniel Rosas (22-5-1, 14KOs) this Thursday on DAZN from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. The scheduled eight-round bout helps consummate his recent signing with Golden Boy Promotions, who Schofield has tabbed to launch the next phase of his career.
“This fight was supposed to be a ten-rounder but they had to move it to eight. So our next one should be a ten-rounder and then onto intercontinental title fights and stuff like that,” Schofield told BoxingScene.com. “We want to move on to the next level. "Really, we’d love to fight [top lightweight contender Isaac] 'Pitbull' Cruz—start fighting contenders and then onto the real thing.”
Schofield (11-0, 9KOs) enters his upcoming lightweight bout having scored three straight knockout victories, all coming in a productive 2022 campaign. The most recent for the Austin-based boxer came in a fifth-round stoppage of faded, former junior bantamweight titlist Rodrigo Guerrero on August 6 in Fort Worth, Texas. More of the same is expected against Rosas, once a durable contender but now a notable name to add to a resume.
Mexico City's Cruz (24-2-1, 17KOs) represents the type of upgrade he expects within his next fight or two, an opportunity he believes would immediately propel him to a shot at a world title on his accelerated timetable.
"We love that fight," insisted Schofield. "When we say we want to move on to the next level, that’s what we mean. Beat Cruz, take his (WBC Silver) title and then move up in line to fight for the real thing.”
