Floyd Schofield is a promising lightweight who is calling out all the top names at and around 135 pounds.

Schofield, a 21-year-old Texan nicknamed “Kid Austin,” recorded a fifth-round disqualification win over Esteuri Suero (13-2, 10 KOs), 23, in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Now Schofield (17-0, 12 KOs) has his eyes set on the biggest names in the division, including Shakur Stevenson – the current WBC lightweight titleholder, who has sparred with Schofield in the past.

“I learned that he is a thinker,” Schofield told KO Artists Sports about his sessions with Stevenson. “But that sparring gave me confidence and showed me I could do this. That is what gives me the confidence to keep pushing. If I could keep up with a champion at the time, maybe I could become a champion.”

Schofield occupies a strange space in the sport at the current time. He checks all the boxes of a blue-chip prospect, but he is struggling to land big, marquee fights even though he competes in a highly competitive division. Schofield has called out Stevenson and Devin Haney, among others, but his record and achievements to date don’t quite measure up to that of those fighters.

“We asked him to send the contract,” Schofield said of Stevenson. “We are calling Shakur out because, one, he has a belt in our division. He is one of the best. He has to be one of the best to have a belt in our division.”

Stevenson, the 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist and a three-division world champion, is already viewed as one of boxing’s current best. He captured the vacant WBC lightweight title from Edwin De Los Santos last November. Stevenson, who often has been avoided given his difficult style, mixes speed and power with the ability of a great distance fighter.

In addition to Schofield, William Zepeda – who also fought Saturday – is another rising lightweight who has called out Stevenson.

“I feel like me and Zepeda are the only ones with balls,” Schofield said. “At the end of the day, this is our job. We are not in this sport [to take bad fights]. The moment I called out Shakur, people said, ‘You’re trippin.’ But it’s like, shouldn’t you want to challenge yourself?”
