According to multiple sources, Puerto Rican Olympian Felix Verdejo is turning pro - and the 19-year-old amateur star has made a decision to sign a promotional agreement with Top Rank.
Verdejo was being pursued for the last few weeks by Top Rank, Golden Boy Promotions and Gary Shaw. And although Golden Boy made a tempting offer, according to sources close to the fighter, he ultimately chose Top Rank, who groomed some of the top Puerto Rican stars of the last decade - including Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez and Ivan Calderon.
Verdejo was one of the most talked about fighters in the 2012 Olympic Games. He performed very well, and even held his own against the man most regard as the best amateur fighter in the world, Vasyl Lomachenko, as the two traded punches in the quarter-finals. Lomachenko, with far more experience under his belt, notched a 15-9 victory and moved forward to secure his second Olympic gold medal.
