Puerto Rican lightweight contender Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo will return to the ring in the coming months, according to his promoter, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum.
“He will be in action sometime in May or June. We are going to give him the opportunity to continue," Arum assured to Carlos Gonzalez.
Last December, the 27-year-old Verdejo suffered a shock defeat when he was knocked out by Japan's Masayoshi Nakatani in the ninth round.
In fact, the Puerto Rican boxer was dominating the scorecards of the three judges (78-72, 78-75, 77-74) at the time of the knockout.
He dropped Nakatini twice in the first half, but faded down the stretch as Nakatani kept chipping away until he dropped Vergedjo twice in the ninth to end the fight.
Arum mentioned former world champion Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KO) of Ghana as a potential opponent for Verdejo.
"It would be an interesting fight that we will definitely be looking at," said Arum.
Top Rank signed Verdejo in 2012 after his participation in the London Olympics. At the moment has holds a record of 27-2 with 17 knockouts.
Arum is still holding out hope that his company will be capable of staging a big card at Madison Square Garden in New York during the summer.
“Our hopes rest that we can have spectators. Right now in New York up to 2,500 people are being allowed for basketball games (Knicks) and the expectation is that it will soon increase to 50% and, perhaps, full capacity by September when the whole COVID-19 situation is over, thanks to the fact that there are more people vaccinated," concluded Arum.
