Chris Eubank Jr. explained that he was very surprised to see his countrymen, super middleweight champions Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith, put their careers on pause while waiting for Canelo Alvarez to select one of them.
Saunders and Smith were the two frontrunners to face Canelo on the Cinco De Mayo date of May 2nd in Las Vegas.
Canelo was likely going to face Saunders, but their fight was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Now it appears that neither Saunders or Smith will get the crack, as the pandemic could send Canelo directly to a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin on September 12th.
DAZN is targeting the month of July to resume their streamed cards, which indicates that a Canelo vs. Saunders bout is in serious jeopardy. There is already a deal in place for Canelo to face Golovkin for a third time on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Eubank feels strongly that Canelo would score a knockout of Saunders or Smith.
"They are waiting around for scraps," Eubank Jr said to Sky Sports. "I would never put my career on hold for anybody.
"There are too many belts, too many other great fights, that can be made. Canelo is young with a huge fan-base and will continue fighting so there is no need to stall your career for him. If anything, being active is the best way to fight him because the more wins you have, people will say: 'Let's see what you can do'. Being active is the best option.
"They say they were [negotiating] - I don't think either actually wants to fight Canelo. They may want a pay-day but they don't want to fight. Each of their previous performances were terrible so there's no doubt in my mind that Canelo would stop them both."
