The elimination of COVID-19 restrictions in Texas will not impact protocols for the boxing card scheduled for Saturday night in Dallas.

Starting Wednesday, businesses will open at 100-percent capacity and masks will not be required throughout the state of Texas. BoxingScene.com has been informed that those changes will not alter safety measures in place for a show at American Airlines Center that’ll feature the rematch between Juan Francisco Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

Fans that attend the Estrada-Gonzalez card still will be required to wear masks throughout that event, except when they eat or drink.

The socially distanced crowd will remain limited to 5,000 as well. American Airlines Center, home of the NBA’s Mavericks and NHL’s Stars, could accommodate approximately 20,000 for boxing under normal circumstances.

Matchroom Boxing, the promoter of the Estrada-Gonzalez card, began selling tickets to this event in pods of two, four and six January 28. The company did not inquire about possibly expanding capacity to more than 5,000 because those that already purchased tickets did so thinking that all COVID-19 protocols would remain intact.

Venues in Texas have been popular among promoters during the COVID-19 pandemic because, until recently, Texas was one of the only states that allowed at least a limited number of fans to attend boxing events. Saturday’s show will be the third card DAZN will stream from Texas since December 19.

Texas governor Greg Abbott announced March 2 that his state would lift its mask mandate and increase capacity of all businesses and facilities within its borders to 100 percent. Mark Cuban, the outspoken owner of the Mavericks, quickly retorted that COVID-19 restrictions would remain in place for his team’s home games at its arena in downtown Dallas.

Tickets, which range in price from $35 to $200, remain available for the Estrada-Gonzalez card (www.ticketmaster.com).

Mexico’s Estrada will attempt to avenge his 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to Nicaragua’s Gonzalez eight years ago in the main event. Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) and Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) will fight for Estrada’s WBC and Gonzalez’s WBA super flyweight titles in another 12-rounder.

Also Saturday night, Chicago’s Jessica McCaskill (9-2, 3 KOs) and Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus (36-1, 9 KOs) are set to meet in an immediate rematch. McCaskill upset Braekhus by majority decision in their 10-round fight August 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to win the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC and WBO women’s welterweight titles.

Braekhus was boxing’s longest-reigning champion prior to suffering her first professional defeat.
