Derrick James Discusses Charlo vs. Spence - 'Elite Level' Sparring

As ringmaster at R&R Boxing in Dallas, trainer Derrick James has been privy to some brilliant action over the last three years – sparring sessions between Jermell Charlo (29-0, 14 KOs) and Errol Spence Jr. (22-0, 19 KOs). Both are world titleholders, Charlo at junior middleweight and Spence at welterweight. It is a blending of elite pugilistic skill sets, James said, tantamount to watching two pound-for-pound best fighters duke it out in a super fight.

Erickson Lubin promised Jermell Charlo on Friday afternoon that he’ll take what Charlo has Saturday night. Charlo and Lubin were animated as they yelled at one another following their weigh-in at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for their 154-pound title fight at the same site Saturday night. Houston’s Charlo weighed in at 153.6 pounds. Lubin, of Orlando, Florida, stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission’s scale at 153.4 pounds.

NEW YORK – Jason Galarza has heard about how much Errol Spence Jr. helped teammate Jermell Charlo prepare for his fight Saturday night against Erickson Lubin. Galarza, Lubin’s trainer, doesn’t think those sparring sessions will make much of a difference when Lubin challenges Charlo for the WBC super welterweight title at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center (Showtime). While respectful of the talented, undefeated Spence, Galarza doesn’t feel the powerful southpaw could’ve provided Charlo (29-0, 14 KOs) with the type of work necessary to get the Houston native ready to beat Lubin (18-0, 13 KOs), also a hard-hitting, left-handed fighter.
