The replays have been played nonstop. At first, Erickson Lubin would look away, now, he stands there with his eyes glued to the screen.
Fighting Jermell Charlo was supposed to be his coming out party, his moment to shine. Or, in other words, the day he would become a champion. A harsh reality set in once Charlo landed a short shot on the inside that turned out his lights in the first round. Since then, it’s all anyone can talk about.
It vexed him initially when reporters and fans would bring up his lowest moment. Fast forward to today and Lubin now uses that failure as fuel.
“I don’t care, I don’t give a f--- man,” Lubin told a group of reporters when asked if it bothers him when others bring up his loss to Charlo. “That shit keeps me hungry.”
Lubin was covered in filth following his loss to Charlo. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he grabbed a damp cloth and began dusting himself off. The results were something he was proud of. With six wins in a row, Lubin’s only setback came at the hands of Sebastian Fundora. A recent victory over Luis Arias just a few months ago, has his confidence exactly where it needs to be as he’s slowly getting ready to face Jesus Ramos Jr. on Saturday night.
When discussing the best 154-pounders in the world, Charlo is normally the first name brought up. He isn’t the only one, however, as Tim Tszyu is also given the nod. Seldom is Lubin shown that level of appreciation. And while he could sulk and despondently voice his displeasure to those who don’t believe in him, the Florida native would rather show his doubters that his name shouldn’t be left out of the mix.
“Saturday night, you can expect the best of me. No excuses, I’m ready. I’m in tip-top shape. My skill set is superior. I’m a show that I’m one of the elites Saturday night.”
