T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas - Lucas Matthysse (38-4, 35 KOs) made his welterweight debut with a fifth round stoppage of Emmanuel Taylor (20-5, 14 KOs), who was down twice in the fight.
LAS VEGAS – No one would’ve blamed Lucas Matthysse had he requested a soft touch. The former junior welterweight champion hasn’t fought in nearly 19 months, and that fight marked the worst night of his career. Viktor Postol didn’t just knock out Matthysse in the 10th round of their WBC super welterweight title fight in Carson, California, the then-unbeaten Ukrainian broke the orbital bone around Matthysse’s left eye.

Lucas Matthysse will make his return to the ring this Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as he faces Emmanuel Taylor as a part of the HBO pay-per-view card that features the Mexican grudge match between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Emmanuel Taylor is 3-3 in his past six fights and an undeniable underdog against Lucas Matthysse. Taylor still senses he has advantages entering their 10-round welterweight fight on the Canelo Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard May 6 in Las Vegas. Matthysse will end a 19-month layoff that night and got knocked out by Viktor Postol in his last fight.
Speculation persisted during Lucas Matthysse’s lengthy layoff that the knockout artist would retire. The longer he stayed away from boxing, the more people began believing that his knockout defeat to Viktor Postol would be the final time we’d see Matthysse in the ring. All along, Matthysse knew better. The former interim WBC super lightweight champion took an extended break, yet realized all along he would fight again.
