In the 10 round Welterweight main event, 21 year-old Oklahoma prodigy Alex "El Cholo" Saucedo (20-0, 14KOs) takes on the toughest challenge of his young career against Florida's Clarence Booth (13-1, 7KOs). Saucedo introduced himself to Southern California fight fans last year with a spectacular fourth round KO of Jake Giuriceo (17-3-1). Moments later, a barrage of punches from Kavaliauskas dropped Munguia to the canvas. Referee Raul Caiz, Sr. stopped the bout immediately at 1:10.
Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas - Opening things up, Lithuanian Olympian Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas (10-0, 9KOs), who is trained by Robert Garcia, demolished Jake Giuriceo (17-5-1, 4KOs) in the first minute of the first round. Egis dropped Giuriceo right away with the first bomb that connected. Giuriceo made it up, but referee Russell Mora felt he was too hurt to continue the fight. And according to Top Rank matchmaker, Brad Goodman, several other notable prospects from their stable will fill up the card.
In the opening bout of the Top Rank card, welterweight Egidijus Kavaliauskas scored a spectacular second round knockout over Jaime Herrera in a scheduled eight round bout. Herrera had scored consecutive wins over Top Rank prospects Michael Finney and Mike Jones, but ran into a wall in Kavaliauskas. At the beginning of the second round, Kavaliauskas dropped Herrera twice. Moments after getting up, Kavaliauskas landed a left hook to the head that dropped Herrera hard to the canvas. Referee Pat Russell immediately waved the fight over at 46 seconds.
Former two-division champ Tim Bradley returns to the ring for the first time since his rematch loss to Manny Pacquiao in April, as he faces divisional gatekeeper Diego Chaves in a 12-round headliner Saturday evening at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout airs live on HBO as part of a televised tripleheader (Saturday, 10:00PM ET).
Jaime Herrera (12-2) has advised BoxingScene.com that he will face undefeated prospect Egidijus Kavaliauskas (8-0) on December 13th on the Tim Bradley-Diego Chaves undercard that takes place at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Mauricio Herrera-Jose Benavidez and Matt Korobov-Andy Lee round out the HBO televised tripleheader.
In the opening bout of the evening, Carlos Castro remained undefeated, scoring a 3rd round knockout of Jaime Gutierrez. The matchup of super bantamweights was fought at a brisk pace, with Gutierrez (4-9, 0KOs) coming to win. Castro (6-0, 3KOs) eventually seized control before forcing the stoppage when Gutierrez suffered an injury and could not continue. All six of Castro's pro fights have been at Celebrity Theater, though his last ring appearance coming exactly 52 weeks ago.
