Will Devin Haney officially move up in weight? Or will the current undisputed lightweight champ continue to make those grueling 135-pound weight cuts? While the boxing world awaits his final decision, Subriel Matias is also interested in what he’ll decide to do.

Ultimately, all signs are pointing to Haney permanently planting his flag in the super lightweight division. According to Regis Prograis, the current WBC champion, the two have engaged in conclaves surrounding a showdown. From Prograis’ point of view, he doesn’t understand why Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is dragging his feet in negotiations.

As the two attempt to iron things out, Matias is already envisioning life for the Las Vegas resident in his new weight class. From a skill standpoint, Matias admits that Haney is one of the best. However, he questions that red organ that’s beating inside Haney’s chest.

“I think Devin is good technically,” Matias told BoxingScene.com. “But he doesn’t have heart.”

Matias, 31, has been known to put on the sort of pressure that breaks his opponents. With that said, Jeremias Ponce wasn’t worried about the Puerto Rican’s endless gas tank and pernicious power. Having been the only man to beat Matias, Ponce viewed their vacant title rematch as essentially stealing candy from a baby. Matias though, had revenge on his mind.

Quick, fast, and in a hurry - Matias (19-1, 19 KOs) took his man out via fifth-round stoppage. Although he’s focused on racking up the wins and adding more championship hardware to his collection, Matias is keeping tabs on Haney. From back-to-back wins over George Kambosos Jr. to his controversial victory against Vasiliy Lomachenko, Matias has a ton of notes to study if the two finally swap fists.

Haney’s skills, without question, are impressive to the IBF champ but Matias isn’t the biggest fan of his hit-and-not approach.

“He’s a chicken. He runs a lot.”
