Although a long line of challengers awaits Canelo Alvarez, David Benavidez has seemingly separated himself from the rest of the super middleweight division’s mainstays.
This past weekend, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Benavidez and Caleb Plant, after years of trash talk, squashed their longstanding feud once and for all. Though Plant would enjoy loads of success in the first few rounds, it was the relentless and perpetual pressure of Benavidez that led him to victory.
With the biggest win of his relatively young career tucked away, Benavidez is now hoping that Alvarez will take him up on his fight offer. While a showdown between them would appear to be an evenly matched one, Deontay Wilder vehemently disagrees with anyone who agrees with that sentiment.
“Canelo too small for him,” said Wilder to ESNEWS. “That’s an easy fight for David in my opinion.”
Alvarez, who will officially take on John Ryder on May 6th in the second defense of his undisputed throne, has openly entertained the idea of facing Benavidez in the near future. Before engaging with team Benavidez in a tantalizing showdown, however, Alvarez has revenge on his mind.
In the first half of his lackluster 2022, Alvarez’s aura of invincibility was indelibly dented by Dmitry Bivol. Ultimately, the Mexican star's ego was affected as well. Although he admits that competing in the light heavyweight division isn’t ideal, Alvarez fully intends on making the trek seven pounds north at the tail end of 2023 once more. Provided, of course, he takes care of business against Ryder.
Benavidez though, has stated time and time again that he has earned his crack at the pound-for-pound star. And while Wilder is completely convinced that Benavidez is the overall better fighter, considering that just about any and everything can take place in that squared circle, the Alabama native acknowledges that his prediction isn't a foregone conclusion.
“Who knows. You never know until you know.”
