Caleb Plant mostly kept his lips sealed as Anthony Dirrell continued to hurl derogatory word after derogatory word in his direction. Stone faced in demeanor and fierce in his approach, Plant simply allowed his fists to do the talking.
In front of a mostly jam-packed crowd in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Plant issued a masterclass against the former two-time super middleweight belt holder. But while it appeared as though Plant (22-1, 13 KOs) would cruise to an effortless unanimous decision victory, the newly turned 30-year-old, seemingly on a whim, ended Dirrell’s night dramatically in the ninth round.
Sitting ringside throughout was an interested observer, Demetrius Andrade. As the 34-year-old took in the sights, he smiled portentously as he revealed that a showdown against the former champion is one that he craves.
“We want next,” said Andrade to BoxingScene.com. “I would definitely like that.”
After spending the majority of his career begging and pleading with the top names around the boxing world to face him in the ring, Andrade (31-0, 19 KOs) believed that his fortunes would take a turn for the better in 2018.
During the second half of the year, the former Olympian easily outboxed Walter Kautondokwa to snag the WBO middleweight title. However, despite lacing his waist with gold for the second time in his career, Andrade was unable to secure any of the more lucrative and notable names to take him on.
With five successful defenses of his WBO trinket, Andrade opted against taking on surging contender, Janibek Alimkhanuly. Instead, Andrade ditched his 160-pound throne in search of greener pastures against some of the super middleweight division’s top names.
But before Andrade sets his sights on the upper echelon of his newly minted weight class, the Rhode Island native is eyeing a relatively soft touch first. Having been out of the ring since his November of 2021 second-round destruction of Jason Quigley, Andrade would like to ease his way back into the mix before squaring off against Plant next.
“I want to get in the ring, get a little of the rust off then early 2023, be in there with Plant for sure.”
