Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya will soon announce the next opponent of Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and believes there is a strong possibility that in one or two years, Canelo's compatriot Jaime Munguía will be in the opponent's role.
"Why not? Obviously when you have two Mexicans fighting inside the same ring you will have fireworks, so why not? Maybe next year, maybe in two years. Jaime Munguia is young and he has a long way to go in this sport and I think a Canelo-Jaime Munguia fight would be excellent all over the world," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.
De la Hoya visited the city of Tijuana to attend one of Munguía's final training sessions prior to his upcoming fight in the framework of the Independence of Mexico, on September 14 in Carson, California, against Patrick Allotey. Munguia will be defending the WBO junior middleweight title.
The "Golden Boy" celebrated that Munguía will finally become the main event on the evening of the national weekend in Mexico.
“We are very happy that Jaime Munguia looks in excellent condition. He is ready and prepared for September 14 and they are going to see a Mexican fighter who really wants to be the Mexican champion for everyone,” said De La Hoya.
In any case, De La Hoya warned of the quality of Allotey.
“The opponent is difficult, strong. Any fighter who is African, anyone will find them to be difficult and strong. I faced several African fighters, undefeated, strong and have a good chin, they have a lot of stamina, they hit hard, so it's not going to be an easy fight, it's going to be a difficult fight, but, really, Jaime Munguia is a fighter with a lot of discipline, he trains hard, he is well prepared and now with Erik Morales he wants to show off and show that he is here for a long time," De La Hoya said.
In relation to the next opponent for Canelo, De La Hoya reiterated that the champion from Guadalajara will fight once more in 2019 and that the intention is to find him a tall opponent. The rumored foe is WBO 175-pound champion Sergey Kovalev.
“Soon we will be announcing the date (for the return of Canelo), we will announce the opponent. He is going to fight at the end of this year, we are already negotiating that. We are his promoters, we will continue working with him and we will make the best fights to the public,” De La Hoya said.
