Oscar De La Hoya’s prediction is the same now as it was in 2017, when he first mentioned a boxing match between him and Conor McGregor.

“Two rounds,” De La Hoya told Brian Campbell for the most recent episode of CBS Sports’ “State of Combat” podcast.

Floyd Mayweather beat McGregor by 10th-round technical knockout in the UFC superstar’s only attempt at professional boxing. The undefeated five-division champion was 39 when he stopped McGregor, then 29, in their high-profile, pay-per-view main event in August 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The retired De La Hoya is 47. The International Boxing Hall of Fame fighter also hasn’t boxed since Manny Pacquiao dominated him in their welterweight fight in December 2008 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Those obvious disadvantages wouldn’t stop him, according to “The Golden Boy,” from making quick work of Ireland’s McGregor.

“Oh, come on, brother,” De La Hoya said. “Two rounds. Because one thing about me, one thing about me, I went for the kill always. And look, Conor McGregor is – I love him in The Octagon. I respect him. I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story. It’s a whole different story.”

The 31-year-old McGregor wants a rematch with Mayweather, who retired for the third time after he beat McGregor. A second shot at Mayweather seems unlikely, but McGregor hasn’t ruled out a second boxing match against another opponent.

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion made quick work of Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in his most recent mixed martial arts contest. McGregor needed just 40 seconds to score a first-round TKO victory over Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246 on January 18 at T-Mobile Arena.

McGregor has competed just twice in UFC since he earned roughly $100 million for facing Mayweather in their boxing match. His swift stoppage of Cerrone was McGregor’s first MMA match since unbeaten Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov made McGregor submit in the fourth round of their lightweight title fight, the main event of UFC 229 in October 2018 at T-Mobile Arena.
